Hi
I need to repair some scratches and dinks on my 1979 Westerly Pentland. Done anyone know the RAL/Pantone code used by Westerly during this period. Both the hull and topsides are an off white but different from one another. Failing that what has everyone else used for their repairs, ie what mix of pigments used to get close to the original colour.
Im in Turkey so everything is difficult to obtain however as RAL/Pantone codes are universal this would be a great help if anyone has used these with success.

I would think that the colour is going to have faded in the sun a good bit on a '79 boat in your location and that you will need to get something mixed to match what it is now not what it used to be.

Agreed. Any good paint place should be able to mix according to a sample. I needed to have a friend's Daimler Dart (GRP) new bonnet resprayed to match the (a) unknown and (b) faded colour of the rest, and the result is so close that it's almost impossible to spot the difference.

There is a difference, though - the new stuff is slightly darker so that as it fades over the next few years it will become a better match. It's worth considering whether you want it to look good short term or long term.

Mixing

If you fail to get the codes, with a bit of patience you can mix some pigmentation into the white gelcoat. Most white gelcoats have a shade of grey...so depending how grey your´s is mix a spot of blue. Then graduate the grey to a more cream colour by adding spots of Brown. Don´t over do it by adding too much pigment.

There was a tip somewhere, (probably here?) apply a strip of broad Sellotape or clear parcel tape to the gel coat and use it as a palette when matching as described above, when you have established the ratios you can mix a bigger quantity if you have to. Some of the GRP suplliers supply gelcoat and pigment kits. Your ral numbers would be more relevant if you were painting. You will need sellotape to cover the repairs too.
