Westerly Cirrus 22 Opinions?

I had a Cirrus in the late 70s and early 80s and often dried out on wooden legs in sandy harbours. the boat was vey stable, as the keel had a flat bottom which I guess was about 5 to 6 long. Used to have a fortnight dried out with young children aboard, with no worries about stability. If you don’t want legs, drying alongside a wall would also be fine

windward performance was far better than bilge keel boats of the same era

Early inboard engines included the 2 stroke Vire. this was light enough to take out of the boat by hand when it didn’t work. Unfortunately it was too light to use as an anchor!
Sounds like a shit engine. Anyways. It gotva newer engine. A yanmar qgm 10hp

Small, quiet, simple, vibration free and economical; and like the man says, light enough not to need £200 worth of crane lift in and out each time.

Add a Yanmar new and it's £5,000 ... if you can afford that, you're buying a bigger boat.
Add a Yanmar secondhand already installed, and it's £1,500 to 2,000 on top.

A lot of people get suckered into spending 4 or 5 grand + they don't need to and will never see back out of fear. It's the biggest racket that's killing small boating.

What you look at the size of a 8 or 10 horsepower scooter engine, do you ever wonder if we really need shaken down over the vast agricultural powerplants that were used? I mean, the alternative with a Cirrus would have a 130 kg Volvo MD1.

So I got the Cirrus for a very good price. Got lucky I think. 1,5k with a yanmar g1 inboard. Only thing is I need to do the headlining.

Probably will bring her by road though so I need craning either way.

Im excited for this boat. And if I dont like it I can still flip it for profit.

Im quite happy, I think. It ticks all my boxes even though its only 22ft. Very smart design with so much stowage. I probably have more room to put things away on this boat than on many 25ft+ boats.

Well done. Now we look forward to some photos. Where are you going to moor on the Medway?

I remember seeing one here in Carlisle Bay in the late 70's, after she had arrived from the Canaries with a young couple on board - I think she had a Hasler windvane on the back.
There is another one that has lived here since the 70's - she might have been shipped out here - but sadly she has been slowly deteriorating in somebody's garden for many years now.

Thew 1GM and 1GM10 are good, simple little engines, easy to work on. Check the oil pipes that pass under the engine. They rust and fail with monotonous regularity. The last time I replaced them, I gave them a coat of Hammerite and surrounded them with a split polythene tube, which I then bound with self-amalgamating tape. I checked them when I had the engine out to replace the shock mountings and they were as good as new. You can get replacements made up by hydraulics engineers and these are also recommended by doyens of this forum.
