West Wight Potter 14

Top Potter Site

Just gone a bit mad and bought myself a West Wight Potter 14 for something to do over the winter months, I hope to have it on my mooring and use the flexibility of its shallow draft to catch a few hours sailing here and there over the winter months.

Has anyone ever had one of these? If so what size outboard do you use?

Also how are there sea keeping abilities do they tip over and if so do they float?

Thanks

Floor Paint

Iam intrigued about the suggestion of using floor paint.... never considered it before but now I think about it I can see no good reason for it not to work

Has anyone actually done this?

Does the finish last?

On a boat the size of yours, the volume of paint required is minimal. The secret to a good finish is the preparation and seems a bit daft after putting in the hours to get it to the point of painting and then not use good paint. Easiest paint to use is International Toplac. Flatten off the existing finish, one coat of primer, one of undercoat and two of top coat. Total material cost of around £50 and a finish that will look good and last for years.

Quite disagree with that.
A trailer-sailer will get a few knocks just in the launch/recovery process.
I have used the marine one pack paints and find they bruise very easily.
Floor paint should have good resilience.
Colour choices a bit limited though.

(I also found Berger gloss to be very tough. I painted inside of a tender in white and it defied attempts to savage it with oars, anchors, outboards etc.)

Can't see any reference to being trailer/sailor. OP says he is keeping it on a mooring, so bottom would be anti fouled (probably).

the duck punt is done with it

it sticks to everything

it dings off for sure

but so does all paint

but re-painting is a piece of cake

grey, white, blue, red

how many more colours does a man need

slap it on.... go sailing

Paint

I hve found couple of old tins in my shed, at least 10 year old but never been opened so I will give those a go. If they dont come together, frost affected I am going for the floor paint.

The Boat will be kept on a mooring for the winter then trailer sailed for the summer, no issues with fouling, just taken my other boat out after 6 months and not a single barnacle on it.

Why bother?

Is GRP..... Not bothered about making an amazing job of it just something to brighten it up a bit as its a flat yellow at the moment with patches of light blue.

Product reccomendations?

If its GRP why worry just for the winter?
Just pull off the flaky bits and get out there!
Let me see, sand, prime, paint, more sand, undercoat, more sand, top coat etc etc OR just GO, its such a difficult choice!
