Anyone on the fourm going on west highland week this year? Like it or hate it? i know that a couple of my mates have said they don't care for it because of the crowds and prefer to sail in remote places without all the events ashore crowded pubs restaurants etc, whilst others love it because it is kid friendly and also enjoy the social aspect of it what think you ?
Never herd of it see link here http://www.whyw.co.uk/
Cheers ulava

I'm going. A group from Port Edgar are chartering a yacht for the week. I've never done it so am really looking forward to it.

I have competed on and off for about 20 years.
The event organization is first class, with a unique combination of passage races and round the buoys. The type of boats competing is much wider than elsewhere with both IRC and CYCA handicap classes including white sail, lots of family crews though as usual you do get the usual Clyde trophy hunters with strong crews and hi-tech sails in some of the 'white' sail classes. There are lots of class divisions but even so classes can be very diverse with 33' Finngulf or X yachts racing 48' Bavs. and Bens. You get everything, including ketches, yawls and motorsailers. The tides are not too complex most of the time. The social scene is good but you can take it or leave it as both Oban and Tobermory have enough pubs and restaurants to cope. (Things are more limited for the first night at Craobh) If you enjoy sailing in company in spectacular but sheltered Lochs and Sounds I would strongly recommend the event. You will probably need to anchor at Tobermory as the old hands send their mates to hold the moorings, and you need a tender, but you can berth alongside elsewhere if you want to.
Go on to the web site and look at recent years to see the length of races and the make up of classes. I wouldn't miss it and hope to see you there.
I might post again if I need crew, but I tend to prefer laid back geriatrics with just a little energy, experience, enthusiasm and humility, so most of you on here would be far to knowledgeable and keen for me.

Yup, I'll be there racing in Class 7 against other also rans and being beaten by plastic sailed handicap bandits from the Clyde. Wonderful week, lots of fun and the last year of Tennant's sponsorship - hope they go out with a bang!

Shouldn't that be Tennent's? Whatever happened to the burdz oan the canz?

i can only speak as a spectator, must must say that it never fails to amaze me the amount of time and dedication that the committee put into the
event and all unpaid i do hope that regardless of the lack of tennents sponsorship that it carries on for many years to come

We are thinking of doing the first part of the week, maybe with kids later on. Anyone joining the feeder race from Kip? Kids range from 5 - 13 so not sure whether it's ideal for them or not, especially round the cans. Don't fancy trying to figure out who has right of way while they demand another round of feeding......

Yep I will be there, trying to keep up with Marisca. I think Quandary summed it up . Yes its busy (almost the only time the area gets that busy?) but an excellent buzz with something for everyone. There certainly seem to be plenty of "family" boats.

Hope to see you at the start line then - we will be the boat looking rather cautious at the back of the fleet but hopefully having fun all the same /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Andy - its all pretty laid back, we don't have kids, but they should enjoy it. The fireworks at croabh last year were excellent, as was the band. If you are in class 6,7 8 etc then its more chilled, all the starts are split up so you will only be starting with a dozen boats or so. I enjoyed it last year - and am really looking forward to it this year.
