The Brass screws I bought from Screwfix about 2 years ago were fine - had cut threads instead of rolled - much stronger.
BUT consider the Screwfix Stainless screws which are marginally more expensive or cheaper.
For Example 1½ x 8 Brass @ £2.85/100; 4.0 x 40 SS @ £ 5.83/200 or you can use the SS 4.0 x 40 Chipboard screws @ £4.39/200 All A2 grade.
I've used the Chipboard SS screws and they are good - usually dont need to drill a pilot hole except in hard wood. Use a good Pozidrive bit.

cut threads weaker, surely?

Dick:
I'm surprised. I wd have sed rolled threads are massively stronger and less fatigue-prone than cut threads. And hardly anyone makes cut thread set screws /bolts these days. Or am I missing something?

Re: cut threads weaker, surely?

I'm talking about Brass Wood Screws - going by experience - I bought a box of 1½" x 8 Brass 'rolled' thread wood screws some time ago and they were useless - just snapped, whereas the 'traditional' cut tapered thread type are much stronger - and the Screwfix are these cut, tapered threads.
I agree when talking about machine screws/set screws/coach bolts etc. that rolled threads are the norm nowadays and are of course stronger.

Umm, post I posted yesterday seems to have disappeared.
I'll try again. This place has gone recommended on the UK boat building sites, no connection.
