West coast / South Coast

Experiencing a bit of culture shock at the moment ... have just taken a berth at Southsea Marina after three very enjoyable years in Cardiff. The funny thing is that YM are just now doing the West coast ... oh well, I'll visit again.

Suddenly, I can buy all the charts I need in two UKHO portfolios (I aleady have the charts for Devon and Cornwall). Not only that I'm going to be able to get to the boat in 1 hour vs. two hours, and then without the £4.50 Severn Bridge toll. Being spolied for choice as to where to go for chandlery will take some getting used to as well.

The bit which puzzles me is the idea of it being hard to get a marina berth - we seem to read about this often enough - I called four marinas and was told "no problem". Okay, she's only 10m but it was very easy. Prices? Well Chichester Marina was only a little more than Penarth (Cardiff).

So, au revoire to the 14m tides of the Bristol Channel and hello Fance and places beyond. Going to be a very interesting year.

Does anyone else keep their boats at Southsea or nearby who can offer waypoints of some anchorages? I haven't yet found any books which offer detailed cruising advice with hidey-holes for a night on the hook.

I allways intended to come over and say hello if I saw you aboard Sgt Pepper .(My boats in the River Ely)

Did the fly and spider invasion influence your decision?Allegedly the balance of nature will restore itself in a few years . I guess this is natures payback for man trying to be King Canute.

Hope you get some good sailing down there .

Best Regards Graham

Yes, thte flyies were dredful - completly ruined any chance of boat enjoyment for so many weekends of 2002. The spiders though ... God they were awful. Can you imagine 300 spiders of ALL sizes crawling all over your boat? Not fun if you have an illogicl phobia of the nasties.

The final straw was the annual rate increase - as always with Crest Nicholson well above the rate of inflation. New facilities? None. Just routine maintenance.

In the end Cardiff is the same rate as so many South Coast marinas I believe they're over-estimating their value. Unfortunately, there will be enough new boats sold that things will keep going up and up.

Frinedly area, though, and I'll miss so many of the people I've met there.

Just round the corner from you in Portsmouth Harbour. Many good spots but definately best time is in the winter when its a bit quieter.

Enjoy Southsea (used to berth there a few years ago and have just come back after my 8wks on the hard).

Many beautifull areas in Langstone and Chichester harbours themselves with the IOW just a short hop away.

Enjoy and fair winds

Welcome to Southsea ! We have berthed there for the past 7 years and enjoy it , locals very friendly. You have to watch the sill tho' ! Excellent cruising area and a short hop across the channel to Cherbourg !

Good bar and very good food in the restaurant. Premier have now taken over the running of the marina as you no doubt are aware.

Was down the other weekend and improvements are taking place with the new managemant on board
