West Coast Scotland - Information Required

Just in case this proposal is serious (and it is hard to tell from the thread if it is), then there are already several resources on the web in the form of directories that are already established and maybe the op would be better devoting his energy to submitting information to them rather than diluting the situation still further.

(From a very selfish point of view I would prefer two subjects mentioned in this thread be given the least oxygen of publicity as possible. Firstly the excellent bm forum which is a civilised refuge from the nastiness sometimes found on the Lounge here and secondly, sailing on the west coast - on our sail up through Kyle Rhea in August last year we saw three other boats transitting in the other direction - the place is getting overrun !)

No, I' not sure what happened to that proposal.

I think there's room for a few more boats up here. Especially if they want to patronise local businesses.
And is it weird that I actually quite *like* meeting other people to swap cruising yarns?

Yes, you are right it is nice to meet others and the local economy will need all the help it can get in this coming year as quite a lot of people seem to have connections to the oil industry. This year we got to Plockton and I had forgotten from our previous trip (camping in your neck of the woods on the shores of Loch Broom) that Inverness is seen to be the nearest 'bright lights' once you get this far north. Should imagine that what goes on in Aberdeen also plays it's part on the local economy. That saying, it is the solitude that is one of the attractions for us so some more boats would be good, but not too many ;)

Re: the tidal power proposal, it was not there in August and I cannot see how it could be implemented without having an adverse impact on the passage of small craft. There were a couple of large survey vessels working in the area between the top of the Kyle and the bridge but I have no idea what they were doing - could be connected .....

As many of you will know in 1997 I built the largest repository of Wedding information [See my About Us page for detail]
Now I have turned my attention to Sailing and Boating on the West Coast of Scotland.

There are innumerable websites covering this very subject BUT dear reader they are constrained by advertising or the laws of libel.
What I want is the TRUE story. e.g. The attitude of the Toberymory marina gezzer or what company is a ripoff ......you know you want to.

My new website Sailing section is awaiting your input http://www.davehighland.scot/
See Menu at top for About Us and Sailing section.

Thank you JumbleDuck. Information about the SW Scotland is sadly lacking perhaps you wish to be concidered for the position of SW correspondent.

Meanwhile back to the matter at hand, to wit: DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFO ABOUT SAILING NORTHERN SCOTLAND ???

THE MATTER IN HAND IS A BIT CONFUSING. THE OP ASKS ABOUT INFO ON THE WEST OF SCOTLAND, INCLUDING TOBERMORY. SEVERAL SUGGESTIONS GET MADE, SO THE GOALPOSTS THEN GET MOVED NORTH A BIT.

Confused of Clyde & Caledonia.

EDIT: See http://www.sailscotland.co.uk/ This is probably what you are trying to reproduce.
Good luck. :encouragement:

Mein Got - I have not done any research since 2009 I expected things to be the same in old fashioned Scottish Highlands.

HORRIFIED when I looked at http://www.sailscotland.co.uk/

then noticed http://www.thecrownestate.co.uk/ Robber barrons.
http://www.visitscotland.com/ Communists who hold a stranglehold over B&Bs and Hotels .........
http://www.hie.co.uk/ ASK them How much moola have you spent? and How many jobs have you created ? Answers: A Lot. and Not a Lot.
I suggested it because the north coast, Orkney and Shetland seem to be covered. Look forward to seeing your site when it is available.

I was given the impression that Dave-Shafa wanted just the 'dirt' from reading his OP.

Not frequenting The Lounge very often in my few years of looking at ybw, I am ignorant of what's gone on in the past and could not identify who has been slagged off......... and when, from his OP.

However, little did I find in 2012 to criticise the inner Hebrides for, as far up as Skye.

It looks as if this is an attempt to 'muck rake' rather than seek positives to say. If so, a sad way to be. :(

Therefore I will remain silent unless convinced otherwise.

There is a very good full service boat marina at the top of the Gareloch.

Several bars and restaurants, 24 hour security, engineering services available plus hardstanding and travel lift.

Its so good that during my stay there, they gave me money.

:)

Did anyone mention Welcome Anchorages as a source of information as well? Generally up to date so very useful.
The downside of it is that it only includes destinations in which somebody has a vested interest in promoting.
It also needs to be read with one eye on the pilot book though, most people don't want to point out that their harbour/marina/buoys are untenable in certain conditions.

There's also Alisdair Gurney's site about West Coast Ancharages at http://sailing.agurney.com/ It doesn't include anyhing north of Torridon, so maybe the OP could offer his knowledge and expertise to help extend it northwards.
The image of the yacht below Skye Bridge on the OP's website is lovely. He's clearly a talented photographer.

Here is something useful to include and very helpful they are too if you have a deep fin keel judging by the number of repairs being done at yards throughout the West Coast.

The producers deserve a medal for their dedication and effort.

That's a brilliant site, Loch na Cille and the little island covered in seals, magic!..I am going back for more in depth cruising up there come hell or high water..thanks Jerry

Hi Kelpie, 2009 when I did the west of Skye I only got as far as Loch Harport. I had sorta followed The Malts up there. This year I may drop in. I am a non-drinking Pescetarian.
I too am thoroughly confused by this thread.
There, fixed that for you
