I have always tried to be very gentle with my teak decks but they are now starting their 10th season and prior to treating with Boracol 10RH (which seemingly is still available online for DIY use, rather than the weaker 5RH version) I thought I would apply 2 part Wessex Teak Cleaner to give them a really good clean without scrubbing.

- Is prior cleaning with Wessex Cleaner sensible?

- Is 10RH going to give better protection than 5RH?

- Any downsides?

If you buy 10RH, you can dilute it 50:50 with water, bringing it to 5RH concentration, which is fine for decks. This is cheaper than buying 5RH.

If your deck is particularly dirty, the Wessex Cleaner would help, but be sure to apply with a sponge (not a brush) and rinse it off metal and fibreglass surfaces thoroughly, as it can stain.

Be very, very careful with the rinsing if using Wessex cleaner. I thought I was on Thursday - rinsed, rinsed and rinsed again after cleaning each patch, then again after finishing the lot. Awoke yesterday to find serious staining on the portlights. Suspect the light rain overnight washed residual product out of the grain but not heavy enough to wash it away completely.

Thanks for the further advice re run-off. I must admit, I am hesitant to use teak cleaner as the result will be short lived at best and the application of acid just seams wrong for the longer term life of the teak and the mastic.
