My (small) winches are not self tailoring... I am considering winch caps (can't remember the name), the ones that fit on top of a winch that claim to make it self tailor.
Does anyone sucessfully use them or did you buy an expensive pair of drink holders ?
Thanks

Called winchers, there have been a few threads on them, mostly uncomplimentary. The only real solution seems to be to bite the finacial bullet and get self tailing winches.

I'm quite interested in some self-tailoring winches myself! - have you seen how much it costs to get winch covers made??
As for caps - well, you'll just have to get them sewn by someone else. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would love to bite the bullet', and go get this gal some self - - - - - - - tailoring winches! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif alas, I shall have to wait a while before I indulge, meanwile, I thought I would find out how the Winchers rated, the ones I have seen are about £40 squids so dont want to make an unnecassary (and expensive) mistake, apart from buying a boat.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I hate to be contrary to the general flow BUT.... I fitted Winchers to the spi winches and halyard winches on my my previous boat, a 1986 First 405 and they worked well for the money. In fact the sailing instructor who bought the boat from me in Novemember thought they worked a treat in comparison with the price of new self tailing types.
The Wincher does lock the rope onto the winch allowing both hands to fight with the winch handle but there is a problem that the rope doesn't peel off the drum so you have to do it yourself. A couple of turns and then peel some rope off, not ideal I agree but a whole lot better than trying to wind and tail at the same time.
I DO agree that the insulated drinks holders ie. the 'SNATCH' originating from Oz are essential items of kit and if it came to the choice the 'SNATCH' would win hands down.
We had some lovely green ones but I left them with the new owner of the boat , silly mistake.

I looked at them too, but as they dont have a lip to peel the tail down , I couldnt imagine them working as well as self tailers, If you get some can I have a try please? C

I have used the 'winchers' on several occasions, and while they are not as convenient to use as full-on ST winches, they're rather better than non-ST kit.

With the Beaulieu Boat Jumble coming up fairly soon, you'll probably be developing a 'wanted list' of bits for your Snappy? And there are several other useful sources of pre-owned and remaindered boat gear within striking distance of your lair.....

PM?

Hi Marie,

Would be very interested in hearing how you get on with the "Self Tailoring Winches".........

If they are any good..........................could you run me up a pair of new trousers?? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

By the way, winches on a 22 -24 footer, aint much more than fashion accessories! We calls 'em "Wimpchies" around these parts, cos the only ones that uses 'em is Wimps!

Just get 'old of the string me bird, an' give un a good 'ard tug!

There now! that should get a few of the "Solent Snotties" twittering into their teacups this mornin'!
