I had a chat with the harbourmaster today,he told me that work will commence soon on scooping out the sand. They are going to block off the creeks to inhibit sand filling up the harbour,he told me that it will eventually be able to take keel boats at the life boat end.

it was also mentioned that the Albatross will have to move as the Quay will be required for supplying heavy items to the company running the wind farm.

Hi Matt

Did the HM give any indication how long It will take before Wells is all tide access?

It would be very useful for our delivery trip from Cambridge to the Deben at the beginning of May.

Not sure I'll be taking them up on it, but the invoice arrived this morning for a fore and aft mooring. Sounds like it's going to get a bit lively for a while

Hi Sweaty /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
I'll be there this year to say "Goodbye" to wells as it sounds like the death knell is sounding for Wells as a place to visit
I really hope we can get together there as it will change for the worst
Cheers Joe

i doubt that it will be finished by the end of may,the target seems to be the year end as the whole thing is being paid for by the wind Farm company as they require a base of operations.

it will end up as the most acessable port on the North Norfolk coast. It will be acessable in all but extreme conditions. Its relatively cheap mooring as you can leave your boat on your mooring for 12 months of the year.

Last year my biggest grump was that it could only be acessed 2 hours either side of high tide, this severly restricted your options for sailing, with that restriction gone,it opens up a whole new world for weekend sailing.

i asked about keel boats as Morgana had earlier enquired about it,the HM said that the keel boats will be able to acess the area around the Life boat station, there will also be pontoons there, although these pontoons will be for the use of the WF company, once construction is complete these will be handed over to the harbour authoritys.

Ah. Now that makes a difference. Up to now the main thing has been the tide window and having to haul out over winter. So if these are going to change the only real difference is going to be pontoon access, which we have at Fosdyke, with power and water. The other thing though is car parking, which isn't that good at Wells, and travel time, which is twenty minutes. But it might well make a difference as we only have a short window to set off or return at the moment. Coming in with the tide we have to time it to reach the marina at slack (roughly) or we could easily be pushed past the marina and into the bridge

I sincerely hope you're wrong about the death knell Joe, We havn't done much sea cruising yet but Wells is a definate favourite as it's a pleasant day's run from the Gt.Ouse, It'll be nice to not have to wait out in holkham bay for the tide as we can get to the pub quicker /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I guess the down side is it will lose the low water calm and high water bustle that I love about the place.
We hope to get round there late may bank holiday and again in july as a stop over for our humber trip, summer permitting...

Was there last weekend walking amonst the seals out on the sand. One of my favourite places in Norfolk. Looking forward to taking the boat up there this summer - maybe with a few others as well?

i dont think that thw works will be the death nell for wells ,the area that will be 24/7 acess will be up at the Lifeboat station, the rest of it from Buxtons bight down to the sailing clubhouse will still be very tidal,no one is sure as to how much sand and silt will scour out of the harbour.

Ive sat outside of the entrance at Holham bay,boy does that tide whip around when it changes, being caught out getting back late and then having to enter wells at night can be fun

I'll bear that in mind when we make the final decision, but now swinging more in favour of Wells for various reasons. Any idea when the new pontoons will be done ? and will they be available for loading/unloading ?
If we're talking about the area where you were moored then it's easier to get to the new pontoons from the main car park, so out to the boat using the tender, bring boat to pontoon for loading, then set off from there. Sounds simple in theory so I know it won't be /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
