I assume you mean Harry's? It's oK but he serves the worst Kleftiko well anywhere! He puts mustard on it! Remember the old saying "Mustard and mutton send you mad"

Go to Alexi and Sue's "Bistro Boileau" for the best food in Corfu, IMO

had a very dull meal in Harry's Bar and never went back. The lamb at the Telissilla opposite is suberb IMHO. If its a steak that floats yer boat, I agree Bistro Boileau is unbeatable - not just in Corfu either. Rest of the menu probably good too but never get beyond the steaks!, which is unusual for me because I usually opt for Trad Greek fare.
Seafood wise - get the boat out and the middle taverna on the quay at Sayiadha over on the mainland is tops. Straight off the boats and onto the grill.

Sorry Chas, yes it is Harry's, Harris is the son, and I've only been eating there for 23 years!!

Anyways, as for the Kleftiko, I normally don't go near anything with as much Garlic as that particular dish, but I tried the 'Mustard' version, in October and I loved it!!

As for the Bistro, I agree with the comments regarding the steaks there, however, you can imagine what I think of the garlic vegetables, that they usually serve!!

As well then: a newcomer then Will! First time I ate there was in 1978 then not again till 2001, then 2004, 2010 (when will I learn?) and probably never again since the place is a smokers' den. Also it gets that scruffy bunch from sailing holidays who think they are the masters of Gouvia as regular customers. NOT my sort of people at all!

Alexi will do vegs with little or no garlic if you wish.

Harry's....

Every time I've been to the Bistro.....Ughhhh Garlicy green things.....
They do, do a mean steak Diane, though!! Probably the best I've ever had!

As for the time attending the village and reporting to Navies, Archies, R Georges (GnM's), Takis, Panorama(?) and various other drinking holes, mostly gone now, Please bear in mind, I'm only a baby (at 50).....
Not too long now, and I'll be reporting back in, this time perminently!!

PS, We held our wedding reception at Harrys...

Its Harrys and I agree, we are hiring ther place for christmas day, for a big do for all us liveaboard types and local ex pats, should be a good do!! Hope so anyway, come along!

Bistro Boileau does great steaks. The Taverna in Sayiadha does great prawns and Olga in Platerias makes 'special' stuffed hamburgers for me (well her husband does) Wish I was there instead of freezing over here!!!

Chas, Please pass on my warmest to Harris, and yes I wish I could be there, but my liver's got a date with an awfull lot of alcohol, in and around the bars in Porthmadog.

Maybe I know one or two of your liveaboard chums???

One thing's a cert though, whilst in Portmadog, not a morcel of garlic will be consumed!!!

The Bistro certainly does. Also available at Zorba's opposite the end of the marina drive but beware, Ioannis does tend to serve rather large portions there!

It must be said though that Chicken fillet is a very common dish, available virtually at any taverna or estiatorio. Mind you if you want it with sirtaki dancing (with or without a lighted glass on your head) and plate smashing then travel a bit further down the road into Gouvia village and visit Stefano & Anastasia at the "Virgina"

Reading about all these restaurants/tavernas around Gouvia I am amazed that any of them get a favorable review!
The two restaurants in the marina are expensive and slightly pretentious with poor service as well.
Zorbas menu is a mile long so not much freshly prepared and the portions are huge. This is a common problem in much of Greece.
The taverna in the village where the grill is at the front(cant remember the name) does decent lamb on I think a Friday night but the taramasalata is so pink it looks revolting and I can buy better in Waitrose.
Takis is OK- the mixed mezze is lovely although you need to be a lover of garlic.
The 5* hotel opposite the marina does a €18 buffet which is again OK but its mostly mid european cooking and you could be anywhere in the world.
However in all these places the Greek people are unfailing friendly and very welcoming but I wish they would shorten their menus (you cant begin to cater for all tastes-so find another taverna) and concentrate on improving the quality and serve smaller portions!
They would actually make more profit.

I think it all comes down to expectations - at the low prices these tavernas charge, its unreasonable perhaps to expect haute cuisine. I agree that a smaller choice of better quality fare would be preferable - but leave the portion size alone - I'm a greedy boy!

Fair enough! I sometimes like a big portion myself! To give you an idea of the sort of place we like I posted some comments on Carnayo a taverna in Mongonisi in the restaurant/pub section.

"Fish would be nice" says I (you don't EVER ask for meat in Gerekos!) To which he responds "Are you Scottish? No says I. "English then?" Yes says I "You ever been to Scotland" Yes says I, it always rains. "Me I like Scottish people. Me I always put Scottish first then English" Fine says I and buggers off to George's for a take away chicken & chips at €3.20

I won't be visiting Gerekos again.

I recommend the Telesilla but there's a lot of Greeks in there. Maybe not the place for you but they are very nice people and they welcome both Scots and English. There's plenty of places in England why not go there?

Is there any need for you to make that remark .Both Charles and myself have lived and sailed in Greece for over 20 years.

Constructive criticism has improved this area, that you now chose to sail.

A few years ago a certain taverna used to serve tinned cat food in Spaghetti Bolognese would you prefer to eat that ,than be warned about it?
