I made some of that a long time ago. Unfortunately, I didn't mean to, so I used ordinary wine bottles, and it was a red. The resultant stains were incredibly hard to get rid of and I was still finding bits of broken glass in the back of cupboard years later
Even less boaty, that reminds me of an incident when I was a schoolboy. I used to make ginger beer and mature it in the cupboard under the stairs in flip-top bottles which the rest of the family were very suspicious of. So when one evening there was a great crash of glass from out in the hall everyone looked at me, so I had to investigate. All the bottles were fine. But the glass hallway light had had a crisis and the glass shade had smashed on the floor. So fortunately I was not hoist by my own petard!

Excellent writing! A wry wit, you could be Scottish in your positive pessimism. Best of luck with whatever next.
