Well done Yachting Monthly and especially Rachel Sprot.

Keep smiling. They will be watching your every expression - especially that first time the boat heels over. Is it going to stop? Is this normal?

At our briefing for first time crew, I normally point out that we have the equivalent weight of a couple of Range Rovers slung underneath. The boat might occasionally lean a bit, but ain’t going to go over far and with that weight will soon come back upright. The RR weight analogy is quite relatable for most people.
BUT then, unless a bunch of macho types, I try to ensure the boat is sailed with minimum canvas intially to avoid any serious heeling. And as Rachel says, start with very short trips.
