Well Will you are a hero for going in in this weather. Let us know when you try it on your back! I have noticed that sons are adept at getting the old guy doing things they wouldn't enjoy.

Related to this an article in PBO shows a contraption like a pair of davits on the stern of a yacht. These lower into the water and the man is lifted to the stern by the action of these being raised by block and tackle or the winches, I forget which. You can pull your dinghy up and carry it on the stern attached to the davits/jib as well - multi-purpose.

Sorry Cobra not really a hero as temp was about 25 degrees and quite humid with even a little rain, and the water was not cold. Antipodes you know. I usually swim every day around the boat in this weather no I would never do it in UK not for nuffink.
