Saturday from Cookham to watch the Henley Fireworks.

Fabulous weather - empty river moving slowly, so water was clear as the Med.

You could watch the huge carp cruising about 3 feet down.

I tried to fight the feeling of smugness while passing lots of winterised boats, but lost.

During the two days we saw six (!) other boats moving.

Loads of wildlife & beautiful Autunm tree colours - What a beautiful river we have!
 
We had a cracker of a weekend as well enjoying the gorgeous weather. Cruised up to Windsor and stayed the night on the island watching some great fireworks at the rac course, and over at Eton. The colours of the trees and lack of boats made it very relaxing, and now even harder to get motivated at work! Went past Gavi's house and saw his boat moored out the front on Saturday, but was not there on Sunday, and despite our best efforts failed to spot him on our way back home. Mind you, I was suffering a bit from the previous night, just for a change, so wouldn't have been hard to miss him. Had a shock at Chertsey lock as well, when I was pounced upon by Doolittle wielding a camera, looking very fetching in his kayaking attire /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
You are so right, what with central heating on boats and the availability of moorings during the winter. It saddens me that so many folk rush to put their boats away.
My launch gets used 12 months out of 12.
 
Saturday: Went to collect a new car. I've gone DIESEL /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Sunday: Played with new car, then went to visit some friends near PH marina, so was probably on the backwater when you went by. Went Doolittle hunting but didn't get as far as Chertsey... mainly because The Swan beckoned /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
We were expecting to see you on the swan mooring when we got around the corner, and then suprised we didn't see you at all, but makes sense now that you were hiding around the backwaters! We ended up at the Minnow for a late lunch, very nice indeed.

Boat has been lifted out as our mooring floods in winter :-( the weather was great this weekend and there was I taking off fenders and emptying the boat. Sat on the bench at the boat yard and defied health and safety by smoking a cigarette and got even more depressed at how clear the water was and the boats waiting to go through Romney lock waving at me in my deep deep depression.

I hate this time of year, the roads into my home town congested with Christmas Shoppers, my SWMBO's look of joy as she presents me with the "boats out of the water jobs to do in the house list". The realisation that the reason my mooring is so reasonable is that for 5 months she is sat on concrete. Hmmmm someone cheer me up /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
The mad buggers still believe that shorts are the order of the day!

There you have it. The river is dead for six months of the year, and this hitherto has been because the EA take the river to pieces in that time, so you couldn't go cruising, well for any distance anyway. This year maintenance has (virtually) stopped for December and January.

I for one hope to make up for the appalling summer and the impending fuel Armageddon by doing a bit of icicle cruising. Of course I'll have to wind many of the locks as the staff have been sacked / retired / off duty and no reliefs. But I will b snug as a bug at night with my central heating - and the River is magic out of season.

For many boats overnighting is not a pleasant option so perhaps being stuck on the Hard is not much of a disadvantage....

What I'd give to cruise to Cliveden and see the Autumn colours on the bank up to the house, lit by the setting sun.

Autumn's my favourite time of year and I haven't even got time to nip out for a stroll around Virginia Waters/Savoy Gardens. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I bet he was not as cold as the poor chap that fell in Sunbury lock in front of me on Saturday. A classic move you could see coming but could not do anything about............ If you push against the lock wall when the boat is not tied up you will end up horizontal.......
 
I saw Jedi in the water on the weekend as we went past, good to hear she's all ready and raring to go! Anybody see the houseboat near Chertsey Meads that looked as though it had broken into 3 bits and was on the verge of toppling over? Trying to transfer a pic from my phone so will try and post if I can figure the stupid thing out.
