I know at least one regular here who will know straightaway...

Upton is a great town, with pubs a plenty. Although its our nearest stop off on the river, I very rarely have the opportunity to stay overnight as the moorings are usually full with narrow boats like Rafiki rightfully points out.

Yes, river always looks busy when we pass on the way to Welland, but this was the first time we stopped to have a look around. The Marina looks busy too but did venture that far along the river - next time hopefully!

Let someone else have go :D

How's Portishead? Must be quite a contrast - much more scope for places to go, but not as picturesque and a bit choppier I guess much of the time?

May be looking at a group cruise up the Severn early next year following the bore on a Spring tide as far as Sharpness... Someone has suggested it and sounds like a bit of an adventure - probably upwards of a dozen of so ribs and sportsboats! The suggestion was from Cardiff Bay, but a few of us are this side of the river so would launch from Weston or Portishead.

Portishead is a nice marina, modern, good facilities, choice of pubs/eateries etc. For us, after the peace and tranquility of Tewkesbury, which was a sleepy, countryside place, the high rise buildings surrounding the marina are quite intrusive. We prefer Penarth in Cardiff Bay, but the location doesn't work as well for us. Cruising in the Channel is great, we really like the freedom after 6 years on the Severn.

Portishead is an easy and safe place to launch your trailboats, and about 1 hour nearer to Sharpness than Cardiff Bay. You could also run a trip up the Avon to Bristol from Portishead.

Can recommend riding the bore, done it a few times in the tender, used to chuck it in the van and launch from lydney.
Severn beach or beachley would be ideal For launching...
