WEEKEND FLYING FORECAST
Issued: 1400 Thursday 25th August 2005
FRIDAY
A broad westerly flow over the country through Friday. An open wave depression will be to the west of Scotland, with a warm front from Scotland to northern England at midday There are some differing opinions as to how much cloud and drizzle there will be on this warm front, but my best indications are given below.
At present I am thinking that western and northern Scotland will have a fairly damp day. Some of the rain could be heavy at times, especially on the coasts. This rain could move into northern England in the afternoon, with the northwest most at risk. Eastern counties could see some drizzle too, late in the afternoon probably, with this perhaps drifting as far south as East Anglia.
An increasing chance of low cloud, drizzle and fog patches onto the coasts of Wales and southwest England later.
Winds will be W-WSW 12-18kt (F4-F5) but perhaps 20-25kt (F6) over Northern Ireland, northern England, the Irish Sea and southern Scotland.
SATURDAY
An old, weak front getting stuck over the north of Scotland through Saturday, with a depressions moving to the south of the Scilly Isles. A westerly flow persists between these two areas.
For much of Ireland, England, Wales and southern Scotland I think the day will be dry with plenty of cloud. There my be some drizzle around for western coasts of Wales and southern England at first but this clearing quickly. Most places then dry with variable cloud through the day. Patchy rain may clip the Scilly Isles later.
Northern Scotland will have thicker cloud under the influence of the front. This will give outbreaks of rain. Breezier in northern Scotland too.
Winds mainly WSW 8-12kt (F3-F4) in southern England, but SE 10-12kt (F3-F4) over the southwest in the afternoon. nearer W-WSW 14-18kt (F4-F5) for northern England, Ireland and Scotland.
SUNDAY
A more unsettled look to Sunday. A deep low will be between Scotland and Ireland again. Strong winds on the south side of the low bringing gales to much of the north of Ireland and Scotland. High pressure building through northern France, extending into southern England.
So a windy, wet day for much of northern and west Scotland as well as the north and west of Ireland. Local flooding is likely in western Scotland with heavy rain here. Eastern Scotland may become drier in the afternoon, as will eastern Ireland. Plenty of low cloud for the west coasts of Wales and southwest England, whilst the Midlands, after a dull start, will become bright and warm in the afternoon. Fine for southern and southeast England with some very warm spells of sunshine here.
Winds SW 30-40kt (F7-F8 gusts F9) for Scotland and Northern Ireland. SW 10-14kt (F3)for southern England.
BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY
A weak cold front trails through Ireland and northern England on Monday, with pressure remaining high to the south.
The cold front marks the north south boundary. Along the front there will be cloud and outbreaks of showery, light rain. To the south it should be drier. Plenty of sunshine for much of England and Wales, south of the front.
To the north expect sunshine too, although a few showers are likely over the west and north of Scotland.
Less windy everywhere.
Winds W-SW 10-12kt (F3) nearer W 15-18kt (F5) in northern Scotland.
