WEEKEND WEATHER FORECAST
Issued: 1500 Thursday 1st October 2009

SATURDAY:
A deep area of low pressure is going to be north of Scotland and will be bringing an unsettled polar maritime air mass across the whole of the country. A cold front moves south through northern England in the morning and then through southern England and Wales in the afternoon. The wrap around occlusion from the parent low affects much of Scotland during the day.
Rain associated with the cold front will be moderate, perhaps heavy in one or two places as it tracks southwards through Scotland and Northern Ireland on Saturday morning. Winds will be to gale force in the north too. Following will be drier weather with sunny spells, although more rain will be following into much of western Scotland with the occluded front.
For central and southern England and Wales the morning is going to be a windy one. There will be plenty of dry weather around, but as the front approaches so rain will be pushing south through many areas, although the far south probably escaping. The front is going to be weakening all of the time and so the rain turning increasingly light.
Winds are SW 17-22kt (F5-F6) ahead of the cold front, becoming mainly W 25-30 (F6-F7) behind it.

SUNDAY:
Low pressure has moved away into Scandinavia by Sunday afternoon and a westerly flow follows. Pressure will be rising slightly, although troughs I the flow are expected to bring some showers to western areas. The cold front may also be slow to clear the south of England, and there is a risk that it could linger through the Channel throughout the day.
For most of the country it will be a bright day with sunny spells. The best of the sunshine will be through more eastern areas, with the least number of showers penetrating this far. To the west it starts fine, but it will not be long before showers arrive. AS few of the showers may be heavy, and there will be gusty winds associated with them.
More southern coastal counties of England may well struggle to clear cloud through the day. There is the threat of rain lasting throughout along southern coasts and through the English Channel, bringing moderate or poor visibility with it.
Winds will be lighter as a W’ly 12-15kt (F4) but W-WNW 15-18kt (F5) for northeast Scotland.
