Weekend trip up the tidal Thames

Easter is a popular time for boaters on the non-tidal Thames to go down to London, as are the Bank Holidays in May, so you are advised to book early.

Apparently some Mudway boaters also come up to sample civilisation :)

We should be safe, there's a Barrier we can use in emergencies. I'm sure a call to Woolwich Radio (sorry, London VTS) warning of undesrable muddy types should cover the situation.
:-)

Any fule kno that the Thames Matelos may not venyture byond ye locke on paine of "Ye Black Spot!" afearing that thee rumours b true that brigands with boats not being maide of shiney plastic with a nice selection of John Lewis cushions(matching) aboard are commonplyce downe there and further that the water dothe not behave itselfe and actually moveth !
It is also rumoured that thier ropys are not of the regulation shiney darke blue and worse there be a distinct chance that the river bank is not lined with with locke keepers every 500 yards and therefore unsafe.
Verily tis plainly not safe to venture forthe, unless in convoy of at least 50 and 25% by lawe must be Brooms.
To proofe this for thyself hang around Teddyintun Locke on Fryday watching them all tryinge to avoid ye upstanding and hardworking for a pittance locke keeper attempting to collect mooring fyes while taking 6 inane phonecalls on his mobile foneth from some jester upriver in a marina wanting a free weahteer forcaste..while jetwashing the lock chamber with his third hand.:)

I'd avoid Gallions Point, unless you've got your stab vest handy. We went in last June, only good point is they put visitors alongside a high wall, which was just perfect for us to get the two masts down, most boats it would of been a pain to get off.

This made me laugh ...... you've obviously spent some time here on a friday bank holiday .... :D

Paul, I can find you a mooring in Fulham over easter I think there is a space for visitors on our
pontoon. PM me if you want me to find out and confirm it for you.

Thames Cruse

Phoned all of the suggested marina's and they are all fully booked for Easter weekend. Guess the boat race might be something to do with that. We'll have to abandon the plan for Easter and look at making the trip at the beginning of May now.

For Easter weekend we think we'll take a coastal trip from Suffolk along the coast Ramsgate and Dover.
Last time i went through the lock at Teddington thay charged me a river licence fee i was only there for 3 hr i am at Tichmarsh Custom House is good but for wheel chair i think St kats is your best bet

He could have stayed for the day, of course!

Leaving so soon was like buying a cinema ticket and leaving during the interval!!!

LOL ROFL etc etc....

Good afternoon everyone. Our boat is based at Shotley in Suffolk and we're thinking of having a weekend trip up the Thames. We'll not come any further inland than the tidal section. Weather permitting we'll be doing this either Easter or May bank holiday weekend. The general plan is to set off Saturday morning and head up the Thames, stopping somewhere over night. Sunday, we'd travel further inland for some sightseeing, most likely returning to where ever we stopped on Saturday night, spend the night again then head for home Monday morning. If the weather is OK and we do this Easter, we'll set off on Good Friday and have an extra night.

Any recommendations for a visitors berth, any to avoid ? Would like somewhere with some decent facilities, food and a pint a must. Most likely need somewhere with wheelchair access, as we'll no doubt be bringing a couple of friends and he can only walk very short distances. For the first day, i'd guess we'd come in as far as the Royal Albert and King George docks, give or take a few miles. That will be a journey of around 70nm.

Second day we'll most likely come as far inland as Teddington lock, but don't plan to come through the lock. Most likely just chug down to the lock area, find somewhere to stop for lunch (any suggestions), then chug back again. Last day, we'll make the 70nm mile trip back to Shotley.

Any suggestions etc would be most welcome as this is not an area we've taken a bot to previously.

Might want to do it over a weekend to avoid Boris's proposed congestion charge on boats using the river in Central London:cool::eek:
