Staying at Haslar on Saturday night and the crew reckon we can give the on board catering a miss so we are looking for a nice pub, good food, good beer and no karaoke preferably in walking distance.

Your reccomendations appreciated (and no I dont want to get a taxi to Chichester) /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
The Castle - just on the road out of gosport before the old Camper and Nicholson Marina - nice food The steak and kidney pudding is well recomended.
 
I just discovered Gosports best restaurant, open two months now, Its the Waterfront Brasserie at Lee on Solent, actually on the beach. Its only about three miles in a taxi, Fabulous food. great service, but couldnt possible be described as pub grub.
 
I reckon your best bet is to jump on the ferry to gunwharf quays... foods okay in GoSport but not great... lots of choice in gunwharf, about 2 pounds return on the ferry. 2 min walk from haslar...

anyone know what the foods like in mary mouse these days (haslar light ship)
 
Well, what's yer budget? If you are staying at Haslar, perhaps you havn't much money left. If so (and though the Castle does come recommended - but at a price I would hazard), just go down the pedestrianised Gosport High Street and you will find one of the JD Wetherspoon pubs on your right hand side. Forgotten its name, and though they are ubiquitous, they do do good food and good beer, with lots of guest ales, and all at a price that will leave you well satisfied with a good night out and with change in your pocket.

Oh, all within walking distance.

The Weathespoons is called The Star. A bit noisy on a Saturday night, but food is generally OK (but from frozen pre-cooked).

The Castle provides vast amounts of food - always frshly cooked. Price is about £12, but you cannot walk away after clearing your plate. Plus a good choice of beers.

Going over the Gun Wharf and it is the usual mix of eateries, trying to be upmarket, but rarely suceeding. Cafe Rouge, ove the bridge to the south is quite good. But on a Saturady night, almost all are very busy.

We have always found the Mary Mouse a bit burger food!

My choice would be the Castle
 
Theres got to be only one choice imho the water margin chinese buffet 2nd floor gunwharf quays absolutly superb
Mind you im biased cos i love a good quality chinese its about £ 12 a head and its the dogs b*ll*cks
Its got masses of choice 15 different starters 10 different mains prawns,crab etc and its got a japanese style cook in front of you noodle stir fry bar
GO ,go,go I want to go now but cant make it but if anyone wants to know a really good chinese in Cardiff ask me

Last season the Lightship had moved up-market - and Landers - near the marina office - has also been very good.

Haven't been in this season yet
 
Thanks guys, as these decisions are made on a democratic basis, I will present the options to the crew and we will then take a vote and end up at establishment SWMBO declares suitable (as she seems to have twice as many votes as the rest of us)

Landers is a bit, well, like it was out together to be the bar come eaterie in the Marina, if youknow what i mean?

The Castle is good if unexciting.

Getting the Ferry accross to Gunwharf is not only a good option in that it opens up your choice, but its also a good way to see the harbour. I suspect I have spent all my time on yachts in that part of the world, preparing fenders and warps, I love stsrting and finsihing my weekend with the ferry trip!

Gosport itself is not that great. The Kebab house accross the road from the castle is ok as kebab houses go.

If you are going to pick one stop over not to cook on, this might not have been it!
 
Sami, yes please I would love to know a good Chinese in Cardiff. I'm not too good on directions, I know CYC, Mermaid quay and Penarth marina.

Sorry, a vote against The Castle on all counts. Terrible pub, (Brakes Brothers) food, poor service, bad beer. The Magna indian place is good (just off the pedestrianised bit), or there's a better one a little way up the road towards Fareham.

There are lots of places at Gunwharf, or the Lighsthip has been excellent of late. Landers was still closed for refurbishment a couple of weeks ago.
 
The Castle

Hear hear. At last someone with a taste bud left. The Castle food cannot possibly all be fresh, the menu is far to big. In fact the food is appalling, the chips soggy and inedible and the service sucks. Gun Wharf makes Gossie one of the best stop-over in the Solent for non cooks. If peeps are so skint they can't afford the ferry maybe they should stay at home! Have a nice evening and maybe go bowling to boot!
 
Being a berth holder at Haslar Swmbo and I frequent the various places.

The Lightship will probly be closed, except for Loos and showers etc.
Lightship and Landers are owned by the same people, Landers is closed for refurb
right now, prbly open sometime in Feb. (Landers just across road from Marina office)

The Castle has always done us good food with a wide choice and Swmbo should know.

The Great Wall Chinese also does good food, its just above the fish and chip shop at the entrance to the Pedestrianised area...

Others have said about crossing to Gun Wharf, which will be pretty busy, but if you
walk a tad further past Gun Wharf there's a pub overlooking the Portsmouth Entrance that seems to do good food, only been the once...
 
I totally agree with you Mark,

been in the Portsmouth command area for twenty odd years now, Haslar...........love it there as a berth holder.

Launders, now owned and run by Andy and Craig, Showing promise. Great guys, and keen to assist all. Castle is good quality pub grub, for a proper dining experience as has been said, Gun Wharf.

Enjoy your stay at Haslar, I am sure you will.

I agree the Castle is horrible. A huge plate of stodge & lousy service, but if you do go there be sure to check out the state of the toilets first and ask yourself what the kitchens must be like. Saw the chef use the WC and not wash his hands after, that put me off eating there for ever!

Ditto what people have said about The Chinese at Gosport above the chippy, it's good but the Chinese buffet upstairs at Gunwharf Keys is much better and is an experience that shouldn't be missed.

If you've got a car, the Old Ship on the front at Lee on Solent is your average steak & pie pub but its really cheap and the food is ok.

Landers is shut till Mid February
