Sunday morning last was memorable for the bright sunlight streaming in which woke me around 0600. Perhaps it was the quality of the stillness, and the occasional birdcalls ....little egret, terns, barnacle geese, herons, whimbrel, oystercatcher....

I'm no 'twitcher', but with nothing else stirring in the strong early light on the Beaulieu River - well, just the topping lift vibrating and resonating in the boom now and then - and everyone else still asleep - it was a rare pleasure. Something for me to treasure.....

I have to agree. Waking up early on a beautiful morning in a peaceful anchorage listening to the occasional call of waders and the quite sloshing of water against the hull is one of the very best aspects of boating.

Always have the bird book to hand on our boat too. I once left SWMBO and the kids on the boat in Poole Harbour for a couple of days while I went to do some work. When I got back she was full of herself having spent most of the time identifying a Bar Tailed Godwit!

Was the morning made perfect by the sound of jhr thundering down river in his alcohol burning drag boat?

Git!

Mind you, I did video my last burn-up at Bailey's Hard; you'll find it here /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif.

I can do peaceful, you know. This one was taken on our way to the pub.

The birdlife on the river is fabulous. We get oystercatchers, curlews and all sorts. Worth the price of the mooring on its own.

One of the HM boats was doing about 20knots down river on Saturday afternoon, you wouldnt ahve not seen him. Where were you?

I was sorting out mooring lines (dumping about 200kgs of seaweed to be truthfull) and saw the fleet of Drascome's filing up stream towards a rally at Bucklers Hard. The majority were on a run/broad reach under jib and mizzen alone. There must have been about 30 of them in total.

I thought to myself how good it was to see so many people in fairly modest vessels enjoying themselves just as much as anybody else.
