Unless he has an EXCEPTIONAL reason for attempting this I agree with 30boat.

[/ QUOTE ]Such casual violence.

If he's hard enough to be sailing on a day like that you'd better watch what you say mate. I wouldn't tangle with him.

[/ QUOTE ]As I understand it, the boat headed out, did not like what they found (unsurprisingly) and returned to port safely. If these spectacular pictures hadn't been published round the Internet, would there be any fuss about it?

That looks very, very bad, but it often looks worse than it is...This was in the Solent last week, wind (F6) against tide, but we hardly felt anything in the cockpit, and it certainly didn't feel as bad as it looks /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yes; things can get quite nasty when you have a chopper entangled in your rigging..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

After having the standing rigging replaced the week before, the last thing I wanted was a helicopter undoing all the riggers good work! Then again, it's the last thing the helicopter pilot wanted as well /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I wouldn't be too quick to condemn the skipper. You can be unlucky on a river bar. It looks OK from the river but then a big set comes through just as you reach the bar. I am surprised he didn't push on once over the bar as coming back in is normally the more dangerous. But maybe he stooged around for a few hours to get the right tide. Its the worst feeling waiting for the bump when you think you have timed your run right but a big set comes through and the 2m of water you had under the keel is suddenly 0.
