I am planning a trip along the South Coast to the Scillies in my very little boat, and want to find out where are the best places for local provisioning, decent showers, petrol (not diesel) for the outboard etc etc etc.

Nothing very involved, but I just want to plan the better places rather than trying somewhere and finding out too late that if I just went a few miles up the coast it would all have been much better.

If I am just proving I'm a bit stupid, then apologies but can anyone point me in the right direction?

It's not so much specifically for this trip, but that I am a bit amazed that there isn't a site (or any other resource) to bring all this helpful stuff together - a bit like a "rough guide" for ports and anchorages.

There are at least 4 appropriate pilots in print in the catalogues of on line chandlers such as Force 4 or Kelvin Hughes. Each have a slightly different emphasis and coverage but all will have reference to local sources for more detailed information.

There have been attempts to set up a website or on line guide most recently on this forum, but somebody has to fund it and maintain it. The last commercial one, an on line version of Reeds folded earlier this year.

The two most popular pilots are perhaps Yachting Monthly The Channel Cruising Companion and Tom Cunliffes Shell Channel Pilot. Both £30 and available in most chandlers.

try here for a start. If you get involved then we will all have access to a free service with some authority.

Responses from traditionalists casting aspersions on the validity of commons knowledge will be ignored! Wikipedia has 'as a whole' recently been proven to be as accurate as Encyclopedia Brittanica.

Thanks for these great suggestions, but other than the iphone app, its all a bit more than a pilot book, more a local suggesting the best places for stuff, and knowing where the local supermarket is and the cab company number etc...

Maybe a wiki approach would be the one, difficult to start off, but when it's up and running I'm sure that people would submit to it.
