The stupidly expensive, premade sail covers we bought last year, I can only describe as, unfit for purpose. The reason is not, as would be expected, the canvas quality (which appears fine), but the white 25mm webbing fastening straps. It obviously has ZERO UV protectent properties, quite literally, rotting away and falling off, after just one season!

I'm going to replace the webbing.

Should I use nylon or polypropylene?

Ta!

I always understood polypropylene had sh1t UV properties. You don't see much polypropylene rope on boats..... Nylon webbing makes so much more sense.

Donald

I also understood polypropylene was damaged by UV. Polyprop floats but is useless in sunlight.

I can't understand how anyone can recommend Polyprop for its UV "resistance"... unless they want to shift miles of it cheaply! Down here, in the Med, it wouldn't last through July and August sunshine. Polyester is the way to go for when there is a serious level of UV.

I find even polyester isn't as UV stable as acrylic canvas.
Where possible I avoid webbing in exposed areas. Either put it underneath the acrylic canvas (possible on the pullback straps in spray hoods) or make it easy to replace! For example resist passing a strap through a seam. Instead split the strap into two pieces and stitch the ends to each other through the seam. Much easier to replace.

I've just bought 50m of jackstay tape and other goodies from these local people near Taunton

http://www.ptwinchester.co.uk/

They have an amazing range of tape and cord, and very helpful lady in the office, who really knows her material.

Well worth a call.

I did this job this winter - the (velcro) straps on my cover gave out after two years...

Used polypropylene webbing, and replaced the velcro with rucksack type click buckles ("Side Release Plastic Buckle") all bought on eBay ... having taken an age to sew one, I attached using pop rivets and with a spacer washer to spread load... working well... errr, so far......
