It wasn't something I had given any thought to until recently, but I suspect the lagging around my Webasto exhaust is asbestos tape, which will be confirmed soon once I get results back from testing.

Meantime, I'm appealing for anyone with experience who can offer some advice about the practicalities of removing it and what best to use as its replacement. I'm assuming it will be in the 'unlicensed work' category (not that it would affect DIY work on a boat) and I'm not particularly interested in the dangers and legislation relating to asbestos products as I have a fairly good understanding of these being a property professional.

I'm assuming the MO would be to dampen it down and carefully unwind it followed by responsible disposal. I would probably also wipe all nearby surfaces with a damp cloth and dispose of this too. The exhaust passes through the lazarette and some lockers at the rear of my motor boat.

Any thoughts or advice are welcome.

Hi there, I can't advise on the removal process but as for replacement, there is a good choice of insulating wrap available. Have a look at Amazon or Ebay and search for "Exhaust Insulation". It seems to be popular with some car fans as a means of increasing exhaust internal temperature and, in some way, increasing power.
Anyway, I bought some a few months ago - can't remember from whom but I don't suppose that matters. It came complete with metal "cable ties" and I wound it round the exhaust, on top of the existing but damaged insulation, with generous overlaps. Fairly straightforward job for an unhandyman like me.
Could you leave your existing insulation in place and overwrap it as I did?

You don't give any hint as to the likely date of the installation. Around 25 years ago, I was sourcing some insulation tape for a dry exhaust amd the local plumbers' supplies sold a tape which looked just like asbestos, but wasn't. The asbestos version had been withdrawn some years earlier, It may be that your tape is not asbestos...

Rob.

I hope that's so, Rob. Out of interest I looked up the banning of asbestos in the UK. To my astonishment, Chrysotile (white asbestos) wasn't fully banned until November 1999. The more dangerous forms were evidently banned in 1985. From the sound of it the OP is pretty savvy about the stuff, but not everyone is.

Good point. I don't actually know when the heater was installed but the boat was made in 1983 and I suspect the heater was installed some years later during a bit of a makeover. As macd says, there were various UK dates for banning asbestos but products may have sat on shelves in DIY'ers garages and like and been used much later in ignorance. Asbestos products are still manufactured in places like India and advertised on the internet!
