Agree with petem. You may want to try having it designed in India. Nope, I'm not kidding!! You can get a fully transactional super-dooper looking site which is ecommerce enabled designed in India and loaded onto the service provider of your choice, for 1/10 of the cost over here. You can't even save your own time by DIY at these rates.. Just type "India web design" into Google, and see what comes up.

A friends of mine did it this way and is now completely self sufficient as a web business.

DIY Web Sites:-

For: Cheap, you might enjoy it.

Against: It'll look crap, probably won't be search engine friendly.

Not all amateur sites look crap and many 'professional' sites are worse than that!

Why wont it be search engine friendly?

My site gets particularly high ranks now on google, it is a matter of reading and learning what search engines do and how to get your site seen.

You can keep it up to date as you will know exactly how it was built. There is nothing worse than out of date websites.

I say go for it, if it does not work out then pay someone.
