Don't you think it would be a good idea if marinas fitted web cams around their marinas?

Ours has CCTV which is monitored at the marina office. But i reckon it would be jolly nice to check the pontoon, lock etc from time to time to see whats going on from your laptop/pc.

It would be fun in the summer to watch the lock antics, you could see what the weather was actually doing. See if the Volvo man's van is in the car park when he said he would come down to your boat etc etc.

Anyone actually got this?

I use the Looe web cam to decide whether or not to go fishing /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif it looks out over banjo pier and gives a good indication of the sea/weather conditions

Yes, I do similar with the harbour eye at Portsmouth and the wx station info at Bramble net - that is excellent for wind and vis.

My point is with all the stuff thats now available is seems a bit duff that the marinas do not offer berth holders / vistors a slice of their action

I raised this point back in the summer and the general consensus from posters was that webcams are of no interest to most berth holders.

Personally I ue the Brighton Marina residents association camera all the time to see what is happening in the marina.

I think they're an excellent idea. We had our boat moored in Port Napoleon for a few weeks in the summer and it was very comforting to be able to see it on the webcam when we were back in the UK

I think it's a splendid idea, and it'd also be great to compile a list of marine based web cams if people know of any.

I know that www.torquaymarinesales.com have one on their web site that is normally pointed at the marina, but at the moment it looks like it's pointed at the work thats going on down there (think there's a new slipway going in).

Looks a bit foggy down there right now too... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

It's bad enough when it's just you watching me through the lock!

If there's such a thing as a standalone web cam that would plug straight into my ADSL router I could cover the approaches to PS from the flat.

I'm surprised SquareMile haven't picked up on it to build value into a SquareMile boating portal. Would be great to have web cam, weather station, local/marina announcements etc on a single portal - really think they are missing a trick, they already have the base stations in place.

Be careful what you wish for...

I know of a certain person (no longer on here...I think) who wanted to see his boat on a web cam etc. So the Marina would take stills from the camera and Email him them. Only problem was he was a complete P@@s Head and when drunk would literally P@@s all over peoples boats that he did not like. One evening before full drakness in June everyone was at a BBQ and he was not invited. He P@@sed on 4 peoples boats and the Marina took a still of each! Funnily enough he never complained again and 4 people had there boats Valeted the next week without knowing why /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif. By the way Medreamer your boat was not one of them!

I have considered leavng a PC onboard with a couple of cams running, should be possible to see boat is ok and record it also so if some undesirables broke in you might get a snap shot of them.

Oh yes forgot to mention the marina has broadband of course

I'm still using my Nokia observation camera. Not a moving picture, but good enough to keep an eye on the inside and current temp from PC or mobile. Movement activated, night vision and picture on request...I'm sure I posted some details on here when I first got it...
