Web Cam Sail Past

Hello.
Anything happened whilst I was out?

The story goes like this/
I left my moorings in the north basin with a nice f2/3 NW and made my way south. Behind Belle Isle the wind fell away to a mere breath and I was concerned that I may not arrive in time. I even thought about firing up the motor. As luck would have it as I came out into the lake again the wind carried me on a reach to the Ferry House slipway. Then it fell away again and I bobbed past the end of the slipway. I had taken my zillion candlepower flash light to shine at the cam, but the sun was particularly bright and it may not have been so visible I did a brief wave as well. The ferry was on it's way so I cleared it's path and fannied about a bit until the ferry set off again after which I sailed back close hauled from south to north. That would have been the 14.38 sighting. I did continue to tack about and went across to the Ferry Nab Wardens slipway (to the left of the pick) on a reach heading away from the webcam. I came back across towards the webcam again, but the very light winds and shifts meant I couldn't really make another pass as the cable ferry may have caught up with me and some of the other ferries were buzzing about as well.
This shot taken of the ferry after my first pass. It was heading towards the cam at this point and I would have been off the right of the screen.

The next pic was taken as I sailed across towards the Ferry Nab Slip (middle of the pic)

The last pic is arriving back at my mooring and about to pic up the pick-up buoy (hidden behind the foresail)

The sail past wasn't a great success. I would prefer a due Westerly to give myself more options to approach the cam. I would also prefer about 10 mph more wind. Still it was a lovely day. It's January you know.

To capture the web cam you press the Print Screen button next to F12.
The screen image is the held on the PC's clipboard and can be pasted into any image programme.

Why didn't you take any pictures of us? There were 35 of us crammed in that damned camera housing. It was bloody uncomfortable.

No, not a lot, just some nutter playing chicken with the ferries, jumping up and down in his boat, flashing at us!!! But he did give us a great laugh and i would like to personally thank him for getting rid of my monday blues!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Cheers

You were against the sun. I couldn't see you all.

This was behind Belle Isle where there was a steady f2, before it died. I was on a run at this point.

Yup I would think you are right. I seem to remember I beat across to the Wardens' and back a couple of times. The Wardens' office seem to be in the middle of the webcam screen. So the 2.30, 2.38, 2.45 and 3.00 sightings would all be valid.
The light breeze was shifting all the time so I couldn't really plan to arrive anywhere in particular. Still it was good single-handed tacking practice. Just got to perfect the swapping-across-the-cockpit-without-getting-the-tiller-up-my-arse technique and I'm all set.

"edit: How will we know it's you?"

I assume there will be a thong-clad lovely provocatively posed over LS's cock pit.

[/ QUOTE ] This is an interesting concept. I may put some research into it.

I may also arrange ship-to-shore cellphone communications with a forumite for the next occasion. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There are far too many people on here who need to get out more.

However, I have a question for the main instigator: Don't you get bl**dy bored stiff going up and down the same bit of mucky water and arriving back where you started? It's not like proper sailing is it, or do you have an underground canal to take you out to the big sea??

I'll be climbing in Langdale at the end of Feb if you want to hit me [or invite me on board to show me the error of my ways!]

But you have all the hire boaters and racers to avoid to add to the fun and add some close quarters handling experience. Add some very strange wind changes and pontoons with sod all water near them and it makes a good all year sailing location.
I managed to discover yesterday that none of the pontoons closest to me at Fell Foot have enough water for me to get close enough to moor to them and that when the depth sounder shows 0.8m I've run out of water. Water level seems to have dropped about two feet in the last fortnite.

Ah. Yes. Well
The lake is still a little above it's summer level. I took the piccy below on Saturday. The tryes on the museum jetty are normally clear of the water in summer. But just last week the jetty was under water. In fact you can see the weed still on the higher jetty.

This was last year at it's normal level.

I've worked this out. It's a wire luff and has taken up the curve by being loosely rolled in the cabin. I am too feeble and frankly can't be arsed to try and get it any straighter.
Anyway. It gives you all something to talk about. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good heavens, man, the cheek of it! While you were out the local council appear to have dumped some ropey old skip on your mooring. Hope you gave them a piece of your mind. Only a small piece, cos you probably don't have much to spare! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Great thread BTW, had a good larf.

Two weeks ago two of the pontoons at Fell Foot were under a good 6inches of water and this week when I needed the water they are all back out again with not enough around them. After taking to the ground I was informed by two gents from the sailing club that there are strategically placed lumps at the end of two of the pontoons carefully postioned to catch out the unwary or unknowing, i.e. me. They were great help with some weight and a long pole to get me floating again.

Apparently the recommended method of getting to one pontoon is to approach fast and "glide" over the large rock just before mooring up - but after discussing the difference in depths drawn - him 2ft, me 4ft 6in, decided that I might not be able to get quite enough speed up to clear it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Am going to do some depth testing around the Nat. Trust pontoons as SWIMBO doesn't do the tender ride very well at the moment and its a long way from the club to our mooring or just go for the simpler approach of borowing one of the closest moorings for 10mins and just doing a short tender ride with her. Have to see how it goes.
