is it easy/straightforward to have a roving dongle: a 'pay as you go' mobile broadband arrangement in Greece as cheaply as in the uk?

I use the 3 contract in the UK - £15 for 3GB for 1 month.

Lots of similar deals in Greece. Take an unlocked dongle to save a few bob but wind were doing a 1 month deal with a free dongle for €30 last time I was there ( July ) Wind coverage is not the best so your mileage varies depending on who you are with.

good to know, thank you.

We're eyeing the dodecanese/crete, which may constitute "a long mileage"?

we have Vodafone

We are based in Leros. We have used a Greek Vodafone for a couple of years now. 49 Euro to buy dongle and 1st credit, then 19Euro for 21 days to top up. Works fine for us and Vodafone have good coverage.

Incidently, I Bought a Turkcell dongle this year for cruising Turkey and it stopped working after just a few days (as did the PAYG SIM I bought for my phone). Didnt manage to get back to Turgutries to berate the shop.

We actualy found that Greek Vodafone could be picked up all around Bodrum and almost down to Knidos so If we go back to that area of Turkey, I'll stick with my Greek Vodafone dongle and use my roaming package with UK Orange for voice.

BTW - Welcome to the forum

thanks folks.

I can take a look around when I get there - it's useful to know that there's options to look for. Probably the conservative (devil you know) in me - if I see a vodaphone or such, I'd probably opt for that.

appreciated

Web access

We used Cosmote down the East side of Greece - Fine once we had got it set up. You have to go onto their website and pay in the credits. No English instructions. Had to go back to the shop twice and she had to ring up for information.
In the Ionian we used Wind but this would not work at the east end of the Gulf of Corinth or the East coast.

We used a Vodafone contract when we were in Greece - we set it up in Gouvia with a very helpful native English speaking girl in the local Vodafone shop. Great coverage and a reasonable cost of just over euro 40 per month for unlimited access. We used it to watch TV and the like over the winters and found it did what it said on the tin....

However, we used a credit card to pay with and all went well until the card was lost. It took about 3 months for Vodafone to resume normal monthly billing to the new card. In the intervening period, we spent a good deal of time in the local Vodfone shop with a very apologetic young man who finally sorted things out for us.

By the way, when you go to buy a SIM or dongle or indeed a mobile, take along your passport, as they need that to satisfy their security regulations. You have to have id to buy mobile telecoms stuff and as a foreigner, your passport is needed.
