How would you produce/source small weatherproof labels to stick on my deck "jammers"? I'd like to label them with something that does not come off every season.
Most jammer manufacturers sell pre-printed labels. My Spinlock jammers came with self-adhesive labels which are still firmly adhered after about 5 years of use - see here for details.
I know them, but there are often beginners and children on board, and the labels help the learning process.
Thanks for the advice PVB, Spinlock have been very efficient in processing the order over the phone (and reducing their standard web p&p charges from £6 to 30p!!)
Are there any pale bits you could write on with and indelibidible pen? Would still need renewing every year, I expect, but it should stay legible.
Alternatively, you could try "writing" on the plastic body (if it is plastic) with a soldering iron, and filling the troughs with coloured epoxy.
We've used Avery Heavy Duty laser labels on boats in our Club dinghy park and they seem to be very durable so I've recently had a set of jammer labels printed but haven't stuck them on yet. You can get the sheets of labels [unprinted] from Viking Direct for £20 for 20 A4 sheets but you need access to a laser printer.
When I last needed some labels, my rigger gave me some. I think that they are fairly freely available from rigging shops/rope-clutch manufacturers. The ones we got didn't come off in the couple of years that we had that boat. Make sure that the surface is clean where you are sticking them. Salt and grime doesn't do much for stickingness.
We have 14 clutches so can answer with authority! We used some Spinlock labels that came supplied with the new clutches and some additional labels I bought from West Marine USA which are one of their standard catalogue items on a peel off sheet.
Additionally I used some various coloured shrink tubes, the stuff sold for identifying electrical cables or sealing rope ends, put this on the Spinlock levers (shrunk it on with a hot air gun or hair dryer) and wrote on these in waterproof marker pen. In our case reef lines are in matching colours and match the lines etc...
The pens used for marking cattle and sheep ear tags are particularly weatherproof. The one I use is the "All Weather" Plastic Tag Marker by La-Co Industries Inc / Markal company, 250N Washtenaw Ave, Chicago, IL 60612 (but bought in the local agricultural merchant!)
