Have installed HF/SSB radio and now want to install a weatherfax software system to connect radio with laptop.
Have looked at old posts on subject but it seems the companies keep changing. Anyone have advice/prices on using latest systems?- on the net I have considered Mscan Meteo-Maxsea-Boardterminal98-dont want the biggest and best just a basic readable system.

You can get MeteoScan Lite from nasa marine (01438 354033 ) for about £25 inc. All you need is an audio connection between your hf radio and the microphone socket of your pc. The software is relativly easy to use and gives the best weatherfax pictures I have ever seen. As a bonus you can also get the exellent text based weather forecast from DWD in germany and also NAVTEX.

SeaTTY is excellent and very useable in demo form which is free to download, it will give you weatherfax, RTTY and Navtex. Registering will only cost about £20 if like me you really like it. See:-

http://www.dxsoft.com/en/products/seatty/

I also have free demo copies of JVComms32 and Meteoscan. JVComm32 is also good but the 'demo' wording is a trifle more intrusive, especially on the RTTY part of the program. The copy of Meteoscan I have in demo form is so overwritten by DEMO.....DEMO....DEMO as to be unuseable in fax format and in RTTY it deletes lines of text after briefly showing them being received so there is not a complete message, so irritating I would never pay to register it, self shot foot in my book.

jvcom - pm me and i'll email you the crack to rid you of the demo across the charts.
however in practice it's a pain in the ar$e all the ssb weather charts, so much info so little of what you need. (ice predictions etc...)Unless you are sailing Oceans then you need more than that anyway.

PM to follow!

I use ours more in RTTY form I guess and really the synopsis weatherfax only if all other sources of info are unavailable, out of range or disagreeing with each other. However since we have the equipment on board it might as well get used.

Do have any other tips on how to avoid paying marina and harbour fees, how to nip out of harbourside restaurants without paying, or how to steal small items from a chandlery? We should be trying to support small software developers who write cheap and effective applications for boaters - not trying to rip them off.

thks all I will check the Mscan and the JV and upgrade from there- the fees dont seem too much if they work considering once we have the equipment/software there are no other costs.

Ouch - a bit below the belt?

After I'd seen the whole lot working I sent off the payment anyway so that's the whole story!

No - never done a runner, never pinched anything, so leave off.

cheers

Ian

I agree, JVcomm32 is great, i tried, then bought a copy, for any yachtie to claim they can't afford to pay is ridiculous. As an ex software engineer, I applaud these independent developers. a few dollars their way helps ensure we get improving products. Thank goodnes we can have these facilities without having to pay huge commercial prices.
There, that's my bit of preaching out of the way for this week. :-)
