Apart from one delivery I have not sailed in UK waters for 12 years + !! Totally out of touch.

Picking up my new (old) boat in a couple of weeks from Plymouth bound for Eastbourne then France. From on board (other than navtext) are there weather forecasts on VHF?
&

I really do not want to spend £20 plus on a Reeds or whatever for simply knowing the Tides at Dover. Is there a really cheap publication that gives this?

If you monitor VHF16 the coastguard will let you know when the forecast is coming up and on what channel. Broadcasts are frequent though the content isn't updated every time. They give Shipping and Inshore forecasts.

There is of course the good old Shipping Forecast 4 times a day on LW.

Re: ybw tides

Kim that's great thanks - excellent web site!.

My problem is once I leave home/France I will be off computers - just need a little book with the Dover tides. Does no one publish one or is this an opportunity for someone? It is shear madness to have to purchase something like Reeds or MacMillan's for something so simple and basic... and 'small'.

Re: ybw tides

I have a leaflet with 2005 Dover tides. If you're interested then PM me with your details and I could p/copy and fax to you once I get home in the next couple of days.

Re: ybw tides

My RYA diary contains tide tables for the year for Dover, Harwich, Plymouth, and Portsmouth. I am sure if you visit the nautical bookshop in Queen Anne's Battery in Plymouth they will be able to sell you books of tide tables for anywhere you want. You can even purchase Admiralty Tide Tables for the whole of Europe as they are Admiralty Chart Agents.

Re: Sybarite & snowleopard

Cris thanks, of course Radio 4 - totally forgotten - Do the VHF forecasts happen at set times?

[/ QUOTE ]

I pick up the one at 9:10 BST, i know that they do another one later, but not sure of the time.

Congrats on the new boat.

Re: Sybarite & snowleopard

Yes, but they vary by area. For a detailed explanation of UK as well as other European transmissions on Navtex, VHF etc etc, see this site, it's full of wonderul information.

Coastguard VHF transmission times, as well as explanation of how transmissions might not occur during SAR operations is about halfway down

Re: ybw tides

Michael, many small harbourmaster's offices and indeed fishing tackle shops hand out free little booklets of tide tables. What's the attraction of Eastbourne? Stop in Brighton and and have a meal in one of the many restaurants. Stock up at Asda or Lidl! Pm me and I'll meet you.
David.

Re: Weather & Tide Tables

Blimey, you'd think Kim ould send you a PBO one as a free advert, then you could give it back..

Tight sods - didn't even buy us a drink in cherbourg, AND they get all their ideas for mag features from these boards for nought...

Many thanks guys for all the help - sadly downloading Neptune has not helped as it does not appear to let me print out a months worth of tides. Have copied the may table and will work on the formating. The VHF transmission weather info in the web site is excellent -have cut and pasted it.
When I get to Plymouth I will find the chandlers and follow the Kim and Cornishman suggestion of the little booklets and the nautical bookshop.

Strange isn't it... The only two questions you need to ask before setting out are 'whats the weather forecast' and 'whats the tide doing'?

We are surrounded by electronics and gizmos but the simplest answer to the above is still radio 4 and cc vhf TX for weather on a daily basis and as for the tides I am just amazed that there is not a little 'dover tides' booklet around as certainly all my channel pilot books & tidal stream atlas are based on Dover.

The forum really can be useful - many thanks all.
