Hi,

Just wanted to give you a quick heads-up on the strength of the winds on Thursday.

This isn't a situation to play around with. A swathe of unseasonably strong winds will be sweeping eastwards across the southern half of the UK and Ireland through Thursday.

F9-F10 winds may be exceeded in the Irish Sea and western approaches by early morning, with the strong winds then spreading through the Channel and the Solent through the afternoon (probably F8-F9 but with higher gusts).

Sea state will be very rough in these areas too.

Gales are likely on eastern coasts of England by mid to late afternoon, these increasing through the evening as the low passes over SE Scotland.

Charts and swell forecasts are at http://www.weatherweb.net/wxwebchartshirlamopuksailingwind.php or if you are a Sailing Weather Information Service subscriber, more information is at the website (sign up fro a free 14-day trial at www.sailingweather.co.uk)

Hope that's useful,
Simon

Thank you for that Simon, very helpful. It looks as if Thursday evening racing for us in a Victory outside Portsmouth Harbour might be very lively, or perhaps it might be prudent to check Bramblemet and give it a miss.

Pleased it's useful. Yes, definitely check Bramblemet. I really don't like the look of this one. With the low moving in the position it is, the cold air wrapped in the trough above, and the alignment with the Solent it has all the potential for a very nasty system.

Thanks Simon.
Friday's Kids Out Day in Chichester has just been cancelled because of the difficulties in getting the boats there tomorrow. First time in thirty-odd years that is has been cancelled.

33 Years in fact, very sad, but we had to cancel as the risk was too great. We would not want the responsibility of any boat setting out on passage to Chichester for the event in the conditions forecast. Even for those in Chichester, with the predicted winds the boats would have to be restricted to the marinas, so there seemed little point in proceeding.

Hopefully Simon can do better for us next year.

Thanks Simon.

And I'm going to have to sort my own dinner out tomorrow evening :(.

One of the reasons we cancelled was because we would not have wanted/expected people to set out for Chichester in those conditions, I had been monitoring the weather since the weekend and had an early fear cancellation would be the case. Also without the visiting boats from Portsmouth, Gosport and Hamble etc, we would not have had enough boats to accommodate the children.

What a difficult decision but looking at the pictures of the Chichester bar to say you were right is an understatement.

Hats off to Anne and you for doing all the work yet again and this year not even getting the rewards. You are both stars for organising this terrific event.

I'd stocked the fridge too!!!

Please count me in for the next one and lets hope we catch up on the water before too long.
