Hi all, I've been looking at the weather for this weekend and am thinking of not going to the boat. I didn't go down for the last 2 weekends and am wondering if it's just me being picky now.
Is there anyone on the south coast who can say what the weather is actually like and if you think it's sailing weather?

I quite often look at how the real world of www.bramblemet.co.uk and www.chimet.co.uk compares to the forecast at say www.xcweather.co.uk.

There are also various webcams around (Hamble, Cowes) where you can get a good idea of reality.
 
Right now it's blowing a hooley in Southampton, unfortunately I'll be oop north this weekend. Windguru is still showing Saturday and Sunday as three-star days for windsurfing which I know is not good for my type of sailing.
There's a surf cam on Hayling Island as well as the Chimet weather station, here. Not possible to see the sea through the spray on the lens at the mo!
 
Good point - Chimet confirms it with a F8 and wave height of "1m" which chimet always seems to underestimate anyway :)

Weekend at home it is then :mad:
 
If you would like some local knowledge, I look out of the office window for you, half a mow.




Sunny through the clouds, the trees are bent double though.

I'm organising a passage race in the Solent for our sailing club starting at 13:00 tomorrow. At the moment it doesn't look too bad for the afternoon probably about F5 SW. But overnight and into Sunday morning things look a lot worse probably going up to F7 and raining. But we don't get the tide for the return trip till about 13:00 on Sunday by which time it looks like it might have settled down a little. Difficult one to call as some of the boats are only 18ft to 20ft and I don't want to leave them 10 miles downwind of home with a F6-7 blowing against the tide.
Personally in our Sadler 29 I don't see too much to worry about in the Solent (famous last words). If it's still blowing hard from SW on Sunday afternoon we can dash back from Bembridge to Portsmouth with a scrap of jib out. But for those who have to get back to Hill Head and into a shallow harbour entrance on a lee shore, things will look very different.
 
The Parkstone Yacht Club site gives good wind information for Poole Harbour. The weather station is located on the starting platform the main channel so is clear of effects of buildings etc, and the graphing function gives a good idea of the trends over time. It doesn't help with your decision about whether to travel to the boat this weekend, but is a useful resource nonetheless!

Looks like it may have stopped raining by Monday!! Oh and the winds look lighter, probably the weather just having a rest before resuming normal service for the next weekend!!:D

Might have to think about a midweek sail if the boat is still where I left it.:D
