So, you are planning to sail a well found 39 footer with capable crew from the River Dart to the Solent this Saturday. You check your favourite Weather Site - would you go?
Yes or no or cunning plan !!!

Looks like a 50% chance of force 9 somewhere along the route. I would stay home. Force 9 on a well found boat with an experienced crew is OK if you encounter it but I would not go looking for it!

Erm .. if its a "new" boat delivery, I would'nt do it, you don't know the boats bits well enough to know whether the bits are good enough. Its also pretty close to springs so the sea state could be crap. My recent experience has been that current weather is tending to be worse than forecast .. so I'd be very wary. I'd wait for a nice F4/5 for a 'maiden' voyage. You're ports of refuge are going to be few and far between .. and it'll be a long detour round Portland to get to Weymouth .. so really first refuge would be Poole on a SW 8 (OK Weymouth as well but by the time you've given Portland a wide berth and gone round the Shambles you're almost as quick going to Poole

Is the inner passage at Portland a no-no then? if the wind is up your bum and its with the tide then the passage would be ok? wouldnt it?

Have'nt been any where near the inner passage in a F8 .. but even in reasonable weather the inner passage is narrow, sets into the race and is very close to shore.
Your timing has also go to be spot on to use it safely. Not a place i'd want to be anywhere near in heavy weather ....

give yourself plenty of time .. if it's crap, wait a day or two or three ..!!

even think the seagulls will be walking this w/e

Just looked at the latest weather charts .. be careful .. potential for some really nasty secondary depressions as well as the F8 coming from the main depression .. methinks

<hr width=100% size=1>.. when's that again, but ..

Re: Probably

Has anyone noticed that the three links below the map shown on Twister Ken's link are for life insurance.

An omen or what?
