Weather School Musinig...Why So Cold?

Excellent explanation Simon if not very encouraging!
I really really don't want to start another global warming thread but many of us are looking at the weather and saying.... "when was it last as cold as this for as long as this"?
The question really is, from a qualified meteorological standpoint, how unusual is this? How does it compare with the often quoted "seasonal average"?

Something like 30 years ago we had a far colder spell than this, temperatures below -20C recorded at Shawbury, about 40 miles from here. I recall it stayed like this for quite some time. As a result my outside toilet bowl froze, cracked and had to be replaced. A lady at work was scrapping one at the time, so I collected it and fitted it when things warmed up a bit. A few days later the temparature again plunged to -20C and the second toilet froze and broke!

Hi Simon,

I'm sitting here having just really enjoyed your video, many thanks. But....I should be at work! Today, the NW of England is a Snow-go zone. I can't even get to travel on the M60 becuase trucks can't lug over the Barton Bridge. How about an equally instructive video on snow?

Simon,
Those vids are pretty helpful. Your website says it was last updated in November re pricing-have the offers expired, please?
Ta, Tim

Simon,

Hate to say it but you are wrong.

The real reason it is so cold is that I stopped using my Discovery last year and the Co2 reductions have clearly knocked global warming on the head. :)
