Can anyone put some light on the weather this weekend?

I've seen lots of different forcast's.

Is Gordon the hurricane going to kick us around this W/E in the Solent?

I may be going to Cherbourg/ or if it's blowing *its, I'll go down to Poole instead.

What have you heard?

Synoptics suggest strong southerly (good 7) on Thurs, easing 5 on Friday before backing towards SE, 4/5 on Sat. That's what I'd put most faith in at the moment, though plenty of time for that to change!

It is only Tuesday. Give them a chance, they have an hurricane and a low pressure having a dance over the next few days. I just worry if there is anyone in the Biscay or heading for Spain/Portugal at present. They might be back in the UK before they know it. As for the Azores!

Not an ideal weekend for Cherbourg though!

Is weather forcasting an Art or a Science?

Thanks for that karsha.

That is very similar to what I have seen.

What's put the question in my head is the different forecasts I read for this weekend just gone, and I don't recall any of them forecast the fantastic weather we had in the Solent!

Is forecasting an art or a science?

Should they be more accurate by utilising all the sats etc?

These are questions not statements, so no Holier than Thou lectures please.

Re: Is weather forcasting an Art or a Science?

Yes, I noticed last weekend a big difference in accuracy between west and east. My old Pa (84) came up from Devon to try the boat for the first time.

I assured him weather looked much better up in east than where he was. Forecast for Dover area was spot on three days out, while forecast for south-west didn't come near till about 24hours out.

Art with a smattering of science, I should say.

Your right, I should be patient, just asking though?

Can you imagine the Bay, eh? Washing machine comes to mind!

I agree, not a weekend to go across the Channel, Poole looking a tad better.

Thanks for your comments.

Rumour has it the confirmation that this is the start of an El Nino season is the reason for the eastward movement of all these weather patterns. Its been pretty quiet here in the caribbean, very different to last year! perhaps not a good season ahead for going in to the Pacific?Last El Nino 1997/8 caused massive damage to The Ecuadorian Coast.........just where we were thinking of cruising next........oh well have to stay here a bit longer!

Unfortunate name for a hurricane "Gordan" another "Blowhard"perhaps with any luck
they will both blow themselves out.
Hope they are battening down the hatches
in the Azores
