Morning all,

With all the talk of snow, thought this might be useful for some of you. Not that relevant to sailing, but may be for those of you travelling tomorrow.

All models now seem to be in good agreement as to what this snow band will do. It's a case of widespread, sometimes heavy snow, falling over a large part of England, Wales and Northern Ireland tonight. Here's the breakdown so far.

Before midnight:
Snow onto the borders of Northern Ireland, central Ireland, southern Wales, Wiltshire and Somerset as well as the high ground of Devon and Cornwall.
By 6am:
Moderate to heavy snow now affecting much of Ireland, Wales, the Midlands, parts of southern and southeast England. Rain should have turned to snow over southern Ireland and most of southwest England.
By midday:
More snow, and heavy at times, through Northern Ireland, much of the Midlands, Wales and into Norfolk. Now into much of northern England too. We could be looking at totals of 10cm through Wales, Northern Ireland and the Midlands, as much as 15cm is possible. Snow turning to rain in southern Wales, much of southern England and parts of southern Ireland.
By 6pm:
Snow has cleared from Wales, the Midlands and southern England, with showers in the southwest. The snow now through Northern Ireland, parts of northern England and southern Scotland, but it is fading away.
Thursday night/Friday morning:
Ice is the main problem to the south as the skies clear and snow freezes.

As for accumulations, here's what I reckon:
Southern Scotland: 1 to 2cm
Northern England: 2 to 4cm
Northern Ireland: 2 to 8cm
Wales, Midlands, East Anglia: 6 to 10cm, local 15cm
Central Southern England, Southeast England (not coasts):2 to 5cm, local 8cm

Hope that's of help, keep your eye on the forecasts. I'm updating throghout the day at http://www.weatheronline.co.uk

Bye for now,
Simon

I'll get my sledge /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And as luck would have it, I have to stay on board tonight!!!! Two sleeping bags methinks. Currently looks very icy outside so think I might just take the coastal route today, rather than the 303.

I found it warmer on board with a layer of snow insulating the boat....anyway for snow its not really cold.Better than -6 and windy!

Why is it that when you want loads of snow and it is forecast we never get it, but check the inshore waters forecast and it says sea state smooth but when your out its rough?

23C below this morning, tomorrow maybe little warmer so I think I'll be skating on the sea and Saturday Sunday I'll rig my iceyacht to have some real fun ! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Crosscountry or downhill ? Pretty chilly what ever you do .
Winter 2003 I was in Muonio camping for 5 nights in a tent when all the time 34C below. Had to keep the breakfast in the sleepingbag so that it wouldn't be deepfrozen in the morning.

doesn't anyone find it amusing that we are warned of a heavy snowfall... to be measured in a few centimeters? Still I am prepared for FGW to be stuck tomorrow by the nanometers of ice flakes accumulated on the points. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

You say that the rain will turn to snow over most of the south west of England by 6am, but omit us from your list of predicted accumulations. Does it mean that we won't get enough, or that once again the dear old south west has been ignored?

Actually working, near Levi... We rented a very nice cottage for a two day meeting instead of keeping it in the company premises in Oulu. We got much more done this way, but also found time for some downhill skiing yesterday and an excellent meal in Hullu Poro /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's warmer (-15) here now than further south in Tampere where it's -26 heading down to -32 tonight when I get back home...
