weather in the Caribbean

We have just had the Christmas Winds NE 20 - 25 knots and gusting 25 to 30 for about 6 weeks. There were odd respite days and I made it from Carriacou to Antigua in relative comfort over the 6 weeks by picking the repite days to move.

It looks like the Christmas Winds are abating this weekend.

The air temps are a couple of degrees down at 25 c and I have had to wear a T shirt in the cockpit some evenings. The water temp is still 26 27 though.

We have seen a little more rain than is normal for this time of the year but nothing that has stopped us from going ashore.

It is looking good for next week on in Antigua. It certainly is not abysmal.

Not quite the Caribbean but today in the Bahamas it’s 27C in the and sunny, the winds around 17kts from the east......to be fair it’s like that nearly everyday.......certainly better than the UK everyday!

I was in the BVIs 24 Jan to 3 Feb and it was windier and greyer and wetter than I remembered from previous visits, and had anticipated. The Air temp was still 24/25, and the water about 26/27 so still pleasant, but we had to get used to sailing in 25/30 kts rather than the “ usual” 15/20 kts.
As TQA says it’s the winter winds involving cold fronts running down from the North.

The weather will be N to NE 15 to 20 knots.....you might get a thunder storm or 2 down in Grenada up in the virgins white fluffy clouds....

You might ask Rum Pirate for his views on St Kitts and Nevis weather but it seemed lovely when we were there and he supplied many useful details for watering holes etc. I guess you might be looking to charter elsewhere though t it seemed much quieter there than Some other islands BTW .

On the verge of booking a two week charter, the weather there at the moment is abysmal.

Have I made a mistake? Will it improve by the end of May?
You’ve made a mistake. It’s definitely not abysmal. It’ll be a couple of deg C warmer in May for better or worse.

We used to spend hurricane season in Carriacou after Venezeula became too dangerous. My abiding memory is one year we set off for the USVI's but had a large swell that hadn't be forecasted. Having crossed 68 degrees west 3 times after being pushed back by the swells we decided to head to Puerto Rico. To our amazement close to the coast there was no wind at all so we started the engine.
