Hi again,

Thoseof you following me on Twitter ( @weatherschool ) already know I've been talking all day about the size of the sea swell NW of Scotland.
For those of you not on twitter just wanted to draw your attention to the huge seas there.

Swells of over 15m are forecast, with some very large sea then tracking down western coasts of the UK and Ireland.

You can see them on the charts I have just released here http://www.weatherweb.net/wxwebchartsnww3opuksigwave.php . Use the controls in the bottom left of the page to step through them.

Thought this might be of interest.

Simon

SWMBO heard 45ft waves average, off Scotland; and nudging 65ft at worst, overnight. Horrendous, with the damned cold too. Heaven help fishing fleets.

How come sailors from UK are astonished? Cannot understand. Always thought you guys know this...

Its because the large majority of them only sail in fair warm weather, and then only at weekends. They never dare go out in much above an F4 because
wifey does not like it. They never see waves much over a meter or so, hence their astonishment at any kind of swell.

Doesn't sound like any of the ones I've met, but then again, maybe the east coast and northern lot are harder than the solent dwellers. :p

:D
Originally I meant more in "you have those weather forecasts often" style  Wasn't there something like this last "summer"?
Looking over weather maps from UK last season - postponed work on boat and launching her, headed south instead; as it wouldn't be much use... :o

Any web cams out there which are showing this?

Here’s a picture of the waves reaching the shore in Shetland

Hard to believe waves like that couldn't generate some electricity!

I'll be surprised if we don't see that pic with a surfer photo-shopped on, within a week...

There were cliff-to-cliff breakers across the whole of Bilbao outer harbour today when I was there around 1500. The field of white water, as seen from the cliff-tops (height 50 m), extended from the inner breakwater out to sea as far as the eye could see. Quite impressive, and with strong winds to accompany, about 50 knots with gusts well above 60.

And that's in deep water, greater than 25 m over most of the outer harbour.
