What' the best weather forecast service for Ionion region? Is there a Greek Navtek station or do I rely on the Almost un-decipherable Split Radio, or Rome??
Thanks

Greek VHF forecasts are duplicated for coastal areas on Navtex. The station code for Corfu (Kerkyra) is K. Further afield codes are L for Limnos and H for Iraklion. Forecasts are reasonably accurate, although it must be virtually impossible to predict precisely for such a coastline. GRIB gives a reasonable overview prediction, zygrib is now seen as more useful than Ugrib. I download them using a UK mobile phone for just a few pence.

Open the hatch, look out. If its sunny, go sailing. If not stay in, fettle and crack open a bottle of your favorite tipple. I just picked up a case of Australian Cab Sauv that came in at €2.47 a bottle! Had to stoop to Lidl but I reckon if its Oz red its Oz red!

It has been quite cold in the past week but getting better fast. About 28 degrees today. There's still snow on some of the mountains inland.

passageweather.com gives wind predictions and the met office has surface pressure charts for the med but without internet.......

thanks for the info, I will go with the corfu Navtex as I don't really want to bother with the internet.
Navtex broadcasts from Corfu are pretty reliable in terms of clarity and regularity of transmission and accuracy, but in some anchorages with high cliffs or whatever you may not receive, and it will not suffice as your ONLY weather resource. The navtex is good for immediate general outlook but if planning a longer cruise (i.e more than just the day) or a long way offshore I usually at the very least check poseidon as well.
sticking your head out of the window and setting off if it looks sunny may work for some, perhaps for a day out not far from shelter, but if persisted with will eventually get you into serious trouble - Weather changes in the Ionian are often unheralded by any change in the colour of the sky.

Greek Weather Forecasts

There are very good summaries of weather services on the public pages of the Cruising Association (CA) www.cruising.org.uk/

For an overview of Greek weather, go to "Cruise Info" on the top tab, then drill down the left menu Cruise Areas >> Mediterranean >> Greece . Note the warnings about the effects of terrain and diurnal heating, which over-ride open sea forecasts in settled weather.

Also have a look on the left menu at Preparing to Cruise >> Weather. These pages have been written by Frank Singleton, and describe the limitations of Navtex clearly, plus sources and methods for downloading GRIB files or the German weather fax charts.

I have turned my Navtex off. I almost never picked up Corfu, but always pick up Algeria split and Turkey! Also its olny for 48 hours so no good for planning.

I use Zygrib - very good and poseidon and also passage weather.

Get a USB modem (dongle) and use the internet - much the best. Coverage is brilliant, - Wind is €17 PM for 1GB - after 23 day I have 800MB left!

Thank you. I had not seen that DMI link before. It looks like a version of http://dmi.gov.tr/en-US/marine-daily-report.aspx, Probably a bit heavier to download.

An advantage of this link is that you can use the Saildocs text retrieval if you are really bandwidth strapped.

Send an email to query@saildocs.com.

Subject anything

message
send http://dmi.gov.tr/en-US/marine-daily-report.aspx

or whatever url. the reply will be in about 1/2 minute and has all the text easily readable. In this case, the email was 5 kb. You can ask for more than one page and GRIB files in the same message.

Added later

I then realized that clicking on an area gives vector winds. These look very like the US GFS GRIB. There is no other likely source. A nice presentation. I do not know where they get the wave data from. The two most likely options are those available from COAMPS or the same source as Passageweather;s "COAMPS" waves ie the Cyprus Oceanography centre.

Corfu NAVTEX

When we were last in that area, Corfu had a problem in the formatting of weather messages. We could receive NAV warnings from Corfu. We could receive weather from other stations.

Eventually, through the UKHO, The Greek navy and the local radio - Athens Radio (?? I forget now) we got it sorted. In general, if you think that you should be getting a NAVTEX signal ie are not in harbour, under a steep cliff etc, then contact UKHO. Staff there sit on an IMO NAVTEX Co-ordination Panel.

See http://weather.mailasail.com/Franks-Weather/Navtex-Reception-Problems-And-Cures and http://weather.mailasail.com/Franks-Weather/Navtex-Reception-Problems-And-Cures-Detailed for pages on NAVTEX problems.

I find meteo.gr reliable. You have to find the page in Greek but there is a button at the top right you can click for an English translation, although the English page only has a couple of days.

Here are some links

Yes it does look pretty rainy there at present. Much nicer here in the Saronic.
