This is the 2 to 5 day English Channel planner for the sea areas Dover, Wight, Portland and Plymouth.

G e n e r a l
A marked change to the forecast issued on Wednesday, the cold front expected lying over Kent to Brittany, at the start of Friday, is expected to move northwards as a low develops over Biscay and runs to the Bristol Channel by midday on Saturday. As the low continues to move northwards, then the cold front will return back eastwards. A further system moves from the Atlantic by Monday.
F r i d a y
Wind: Southwest force 5 in the east at first, otherwise North to Northwest force 3 or 4, becomes mainly East to Northeast through the morning and veers South force 5 or 6 across Dover and southern parts of Wight and Portland.
Weather: Occasional rain, some heavy bursts especially later. Drier for a time in the west.
Visibility: Moderate or good, but at times poor, especially in rain to the south of the front.

Sea State: Slight, or Moderate on exposed waters.

S a t u r d a y

Wind: East or Northeast force 3 or 4 in the west at first, otherwise South force 5 or 6. Becoming Northwest force 4 or 5 in the west later.
Weather: Occasional rain, some heavy, clears in the west later to a few showers.

Visibility: Moderate or poor in rain, becomes good in the west later.

Sea State: Slight, or Moderate on exposed waters.

S u n d a y

Wind: South force 5 or 6 in the east at first, becomes Northwest then West force 4 or 5 as the front crosses the area.
Weather: Rain clear to the east with a few showers to follow from the west.

Visibility: Moderate or poor in rain, otherwise good.

Sea State: Slight, or Moderate exposed waters.

M o n d a y

West winds of force 4 or 5 increase Southwest force 5 or 6, locally force 7 in the west. A few showers at first, then occasional rain, especially into the west. Moderate or good visibility, but the sea is likely to become Rough in the west later.

Translates to:

Friday Night - head to wind, rough as old boots peeing with rain, viz 'orrible radar on past Bembridge
Sunday Night - head to wind, rough as old boots peeing with rain on the way back!

Looking forward to reading the MCA report in a couple of weeks, "mystery holding tank and a sporan found washed up on............."

Och yer jist jealous 'cos yer not allowed out to play.

Real scenario
Trip across F4 run under spinnaker till around Barfleur when a couple of tacks into a strengthening southerly takes us through the lock at St Vaast.
Return trip is a F5 beam reach

My maps make it look closer to a run than a reach, and quite possible nearer 6 than 5, particularly midday Sunday. As the day progresses the wind is likely to veer steadily.

I couldn't resist running it through the nav system - shows a really unusual take on tridal tactics! the screen shot is here.

This was for a lunch time departure, and is from offshore rather than lock gates - I havent even begun tro check when you could get out. If you want a real run, for a genuine time let me know!

Oooh Jim. Online routing advice. Is it bespoke for Glen Rosa's "polar wotsits"? And can you get it updated as you go along?

Hope you have a good trip (what's the betting you don't get past Bembridge?)
