we thought we were nearly there and...

£150 + (8x£50) = £550
And that's not taking into account the Fox's winter discount.
Anyway, nowhere near a grand.

Can't believe I'm on here defending Fox's - and I'm not even on their X-Mas card list. :p

I don't think there was a critisim of foxes , we all know boat yards think of a number , double it and add a couple of zeros
More like why not do it himself and spend what he saves on something nice .

For accuracy I was asking advice re measures to prevent this repeating as opposed to DIY tips. Grateful though I am for any advice. Cost for bearings way off in posts above. Labour well if I were to try and do this it would end up on someone's bunch so I'd rather get the job done efficiently with the yardbcompleting learning as I go. The £1k bit was for a new pedestal.

We changed to Jefa bearing (see www.jefa.com/rudder.htm), they are self aligning and use roller not balls, the rudder was so free after conversion that the rudder would blow in the wind when the boat was on a cradle. Recomended maintainance is wash out with warm clear water each time the boat is lifted (pref yearly), easy to drop rudder if required. Hope this helps.
Guess you are not going to race if you have sold off your racing sails!

Ok , so I could have probably saved a few quid with a DIY job. I will try and be a bit braver but now the work is commissioned and it will be done by the weekend or just after. So I am now compound, polish and waxing DiY instead an option now not open to me.

But just look at those shiny keel bolts!!!!

I figure that the winter sailing programme will not require AIS as much as probably radar with fog so I will master what I have already on board. I imagine sea trial will take place within close confines and the odd trip further afield. But..... By the start of the new season we will know our new vessel much better than if we had been completing drills on the hard! Plus I may get the bonus of a New Year's Eve afloat so if other ECF's have any tips or recommendations I am hanging up my ski boots this season given the new boat!

Et Moi

Sods law!

Just about come to the end of a long refit list feeling smug and considering what treats we may be able to afford with the pennies left in our budget and guess what..... steering pedestal seized beyond belief!:-(

Small world!

Just hauled the UK boat & returned to Portugal to commission the one out here which has been on the hard for 4 months & discovered wheel steering v.stiff - OK when we hauled last May?

Rod steering so disconnected pedestal & established problem not pedestal but rudder stock:eek:.

Fortunately boat was high enough to drop the rudder without lifting the boat further:) but had to use a blow torch & 4 guys to free the rudder.

Discovered slight corrosion on the bottom & top of the aluminium stock where it came in contact with the nylon bushes.

Buffed up all surfaces, replaced rudder - job done. It took about 2 hours to free the rudder & a further 2 hours to buff & replace so I relaunched only 1 hour later than intended.

Portuguese guys advised this is a regular problem caused by salt & the high summer temperatures ashore - so no fear of it happening on the East Coast;)

Oh yes, less than 100 metres after launching picked up a submerged milk cartoon masquerading as a fishing float - but a quick swim underneath confirmed that the cutter had been fed & the rudder was unharmed:D

One day in the life of a boatie:cool:

Thank God we don't have a house to paint.
