We Reefed, They Didn't!

Overtaken by Artemis off Calshot on Thursday, in a gusty SW wind. We put 2 reefs in the main, then noticed that Artemis had lost her mast. Fortunately we heard on the radio that no-one was injured and they were able to motor slowly back to harbour.

Rig for the lulls?

That's to do with comfort and keeping the boat upright more than not losing the rig. I don't believe that modern boats and rigs shouldn't ever fail just from pressure of wind. Rolling the boat might lose you the rig, but too much sail up damages sails and makes the boat lean too much with all the consequences of weather helm and poor sailing performance. It shouldn't stress the rig to the point of failure!

+1 The rig must have been lost from an unexpected failure of a component or bad design. It is possible that not reefing would have been Ok in the conditions if the main sail can be flattened and depowered by mast bend etc. (might have been over done) but for us mere mortals reefing is the best way to get max speed and pointing when the wind comes up. Heeling over becomes a losing way to go . olewill

It's still true that the time to reef is when you first think of it. Except, of course, for those who never think of it ....
