We arrived in Rodney bay late on Wednesday night and I am trying to get over the hangover.
I have not yet had a chance to read the posts relating to our experience but will get there in due course in the meantime any questions . . . then fire away and I will try and get online regularly enough to reply.

Met TCM and STINGO yesterday afternoon in Scuttlebutts bar, good job I leave here on Sunday or I might end up with a drink problem to add to the list. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Great to hear from you .Boats can be replaced. What happened to cause the boat to sink?

/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifThat is the normal reason for sinking I guess.Ive never had the misfortune to be dismasted but imagine it must be a nightmare trying to cut all the wires etc before it poleaxes someone or rams the hull?

Glad to read that you arrived safely and very sorry to hear of the loss of boat. Can't magine it. We were all very impressed that you rang Mrs SP first !!

We pulled the pins to get rid of the rig which took us about 30 to 40 minutes in total, it was much easier than trying to saw the wires. No idea why the rig came down we did not have the time to investigate. If you are ever unfortunate enough to lose a rig then beware of the angry end its sharp and will try to take your head off.

On another note I have read the previous thread now and thanks to everyone for all the positive comments. Whether she will sink or not I have no idea but she was certainly filling fairly rapidly. We did consider a jury rig once we had just ditched the main one, but all we had was a broken spinny pole and a very long boat hook and at that time we did not realise we were filling as we were still out on deck. As soon as we discovered the water ingress I initiated the Mayday as it was definitely game over for us then. The guys on 'Navillus' were fantastic and I really did not care about the type of boat, but the tear in the mainsail was not a great sight and I did offer to sew it for them.

we've thinking and talking about you, as you know. Really glad to hear you are all in one piece and so is your crew. Well done under the circumstances and I hope you will soon be back afloat. We might drop by again in St Mary's in the summer...

Well done, sorry about the boat but glad you are OK. Have a rum punch for me and don't get too spaced out from the ganja fumes in the marina bar!

Pete mate, I am delighted to hear that you are safe and sound and taking the medicine. We are all very impressed by your handling of the emergency but very sorry to hear of the loss of your boat. As a fellow Prout owner could I ask for a bit more detail though? What were the conditions at the time and what sail were you carrying? It sounds from what you said about the sharp angry end, that your mast actually broke and the top end came down and poleaxed you. Is that actually what happened? As the deck itself is immensely strong I assume that the rig swung out over the side and smashed into the hull on or below the waterline. Could you tell us where it was actually holed, and how far up the mast actually broke if it's not too painful talking about it?

Great news that no-one was hurt. Could so easily have been different as with that poor ARC chap who was fatally injured by his boom when he broached.

Does show the danger of a dismasting. I understand the RORC rules were changed to make separate tethering of the base of keel stepped masts mandatory after injuries and damage caused by the flailing ends of masts inside the boat after a number of dismastings.

As other have said, the benefits of a cat came out in this situation, if you had a mono-hull it could have been a very different outcome.

Good news to hear that you are back on shore. Sometimes [--word removed--] happens and I don't think there is any way to fully protect against it. You seem to have handled this very well indeed as the ocean is a lonely place when it all goes wrong.

Hope you are back afloat in the very near future

Yes you are correct in respect of the winch, the boat hit a wave and the chap fell on to the winch.... it's stated in the yachts blog / Own website. Although i think there was an initial press release of being hit by a boom.

Sincerest condolences to his family.
