Good news indeed. As an ex-pat living abroad I'm very excited to see my homeland win. Best of luck to everyone involved and it gives me a long-term date to aim for to sail back from NZ to the UK via a 2 year blue water cruise. Excellent!

I hate to say it, but the non-sporty types as you put it will benefit in directly from the hosting the Olympics, the economy is bound to be boosted by it, also local infrastructure improvements and what about providing sports facilitys for the young. Its just like saying why do I pay for income tax.

All very true. What I cannot stomach however is all this 'the locals will benifit' bull [no thanks].
Wapping, Isle of Dogs etc are vastly improved since I started my MN training in the early 70s but very very few of the locals then are still living there now.( I worked in the area in the 90s so have first hand exprience of the changes between working docks and Yuppie and Dinky land. Its the way of the world but the same will occur in Stratford with the Olympics and Cross Channel Link interchange, the present locals will get rehoused to pimp in Peckham, do crack in Camberwell and get Drunk in Dalston.

Precisely the same argument as the Community Charge (Poll Tax). We all hold different political views, and I respect our democratic government, but doesn't mean I have to agree.
Of course your example 'pensioner on means tested benefits' would not pay ... that's the whole essence of means testing.
