Once returning from Germany in the late 60s, I did not realise until I got to the Dartford Toll station that I had no UK money at all, only Deutsch Marks. Toll keeper could not possibly accept foreign money, but suggested I write a cheque, it was smallest one I have ever written, for 2/6d.
