I read that i should spray the entire engine (mercruiser petrol) with WD40 as part of winterisation is this right enough ?
also manuals talk about fogging down carb - how do you fog a MPI ?

cheers

Water Displacement 40 days is what it stands for

Actually, the 40 refers to the fact that it was the 40th formulation that finally worked /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This is indeed correct.

The five basic functions of WD-40 are, cleaning, lubricating, penetrating stuck metal parts, displacing moisture, and protecting against rust and corrosion. While its uses are many and varied, WD-40 should not be used as a general-purpose lubricant, as it dries out very quickly and collects dust, and only contains 15% of mineral oil (light lubricating oil)

WD40 also acts as a solvent and should not be used where removal of grease is an issue, such as exposed bearings, it may damage the grease and cause premature wear. As plastics and rubber are oil based, it will eventually attack them.

Hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: WD40 & engine. Another preservative

WD40 and similar liquids are solvent based, and may not be suitable in an enclosed atmosphere. The oily film has a tendency to evaporate under various environmental conditions, too.

I'd recommend Castrol's aqueous based preserving solutions. They can be used for up to 12 months storage. (Aquasafe 30 and 40)

Re: WD40 & engine

I have and use the product advised by LittleShip for some 12 months now "Corrosion Block" is excellent and does what it says. The grease is also good and well worth the money.
Got to say I find WD40 Not as good as it was when it first came out.

Just another satisfied customer.

Re: WD40 & engine

Can you buy Corrosion Block in 5l cans ? It sounds good from their website, and gives me an excuse to go to their dealers (mainly Motorcycles, it seems)

For preservation of plain metal (bare or painted) I'll back the Castrol product, which we use for the baler, mower, and other ag implements stored outside. It certainly keeps the rust away, and doesn't evaporate off the surface as WD40 and Duck Oil seem to do (agree that WD40 ain't wot it use ter be)

Re: WD40 & engine

Look at www.enginewise.co.uk. They do a whole range of engine protection sprays and also corroision inhibiting paper. Had engines winterised once when boat was new a few years back and still under warranty and Engineer used this stuff on top of the engines. He laid it on top and down the sides. Claimed it was better and less messy than sprays.

The manual states that you run the engine between 1000-1500rpm and spray 8oz (227g) of Storage Seal into the throttle body air inlet, you will have to remove the flame guard first, then return to idle and rapidly spray 2 oz (57g) S.Seal into the inlet to stall the engine.

I would recommend you change the fuel filter and add a bottle of Fuel Stabilisor and fill the tank and run it through the system before you winterise the engine.
