Waterway breach...

There's been a breach on the canal system near Middlewich; perhaps not much of interest to Thames boaters

BUT

If CaRT took over the Thames would you or I want to have repairs funded by public donations? A cynical thought come to my mind is - if the public don't cough up it doesn't get fixed....

It will still get fixed much like the last major breach a year or so ago. They just raided the biscuit fund and magically found the money to fix it after the public donations raised just 1% of the money needed to repair the damage.

What caused it, does anyone know? Old age or a sinkhole?

The local newspaper reckoned it was a sink hole but it is more likely that is has had a leak. The ground in the area is sand so a small leak will soon turn into a larger leak and pretty quickly a breach as seen here.

Old age then. Small leaks turning into big leaks are par for the course
