Waterpump Paper Gasket

On one of my boats, the previous owner had used RTV for the rocker cover gasket.
It did the job, but I found lots of bits of it in the sump.
Any excess can be squeezed into a bead which may break off inside the engine.
It has its uses, but any sign of 'gorilla snot' on an engine is usually a clue that the bodgers have been in town.

Anyone can make a pig's ear of using it.
Most vehicles use RTV for everything. If you don't feel confident in makings a good seal without use agasket. Many manufacturers specify itfor joints. Over 20 years ago I was surprised that Renault specified their own-brand RTV for a sump joint.
